What I enjoyed about the story is that author Pooley shows how people aren’t what they appear to be. This single event starts a chain reaction, and an eclectic group of people, with almost nothing in common except their commute, discover that talking to strangers on the train might be uncomfortable and awkward, but it can challenge all of their assumptions and prejudices, and could even transform their life. This feel-good ensemble story will bring joy to readers who loved Anxious People and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine-not to mention fans of quirky London-set fare such as Ted Lasso. That Iona becomes the glue of this ragtag group of commuters is the thrust of the story, a tale that made me just so very happy.

But hey, with almost solid 5 star reviews I bet this book will be the winner of some kind of GR award or something. Clare Corbett the narrator, did a superb job In bringing the characters to life with her many voices. Well, once she decides to seize the commuting day and all that, where she reveals herself to be as formidable as suggested but with vulnerabilities and very real issues of her own which gives those she has formed into an unexpected family the chance to help save her right back. It turns out that talking to strangers can teach you about the world around you–and even more about yourself. Her editor decides the magazine needs to attract a younger demographic and soon she's put on notice.Initially, Iona, who is on the verge of being pushed out of her job is motivated to interact with the younger crowd to gain some insight into the lives and interests of younger people so that she can make changes in her approach to her job (she is being pressured by her boss who wants to boost readership in that demographic) but gradually she finds herself helping Piers, Sanjay, Emmie, David and Martha as they navigate through their own problems, her thoughtfulness and concern reciprocated when Iona finds herself in need of friends and support, proving first impressions might not always be accurate and it is only through kindness, compassion and communication can we truly understand one another. But as the story plays out we come to realize she's little more than an aging lesbian who enjoys counseling strangers she sees regularly on the train. Iona sees the same group of people each day - ones she makes assumptions about, gives nicknames to, but never ever talks to. They never speak to one another — or anyone else on board — because that’s just not the done thing between commuters. Clare’s debut novel The Authenticity Project is inspired by her decision to expose the rather grubby truth about her seemingly perfect life in her memoir. A single act of kindness between this odd mix of people who have absolutely nothing in common except their daily train ride, is the spark that lights the way to so much more entering their lives! And while it's relatively well written and paced, the predictability of characters and plot are disappointing. Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting" by Clare Pooley is a story about perceptions, kindness, and friendship! I was bored half way through the book, I did not care about any characters nor Iona for some reason.

In fact, so honest is this affectingly uplifting novel, that the author admits is based on some very real world issues that have directly affected her such as ageism in the workforce, bullying and the peculiarly awful grief of losing someone near and dear to you, that there are times when you wonder how the vividly realised characters are going to come out the other side. If you are an inveterate reader, the odds are good, better than good actually, that fellow readers or close friends (sometimes, happily, they are both) that at some point they will recommend a book to you.

The audiobook narrator, Clare Corbett, does a fabulous job delivering the one-liner comments creatively written by the author. Everyone on the train knows Iona, the larger-than-life magazine therapist who drinks tea, in a proper tea cup, each morning. Not even a little bit; frankly I love the idea that you can find just the right people to help you, that they all end up overcoming any reluctance they have to form bonds with people they’ve only ever cursorily nodded at, and that they form the kind of supportive grouping capable of turning lives around.
