About this deal

The story is told from several points of view with the storytelling cleverly flowing seamlessly between one and the other.

The Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson | Waterstones

He’s hired by a woman who thinks her husband is cheating on her and wants evidence, which, at least based on TV shows and books, seems like the number one job of PIs. I could honestly read about Lily and Henry forever, as I think they are the two of the best characters around! Yes, it might help to know some of the backstory before starting book two, but that nagging feleing of having read it before will not apply to readers whoo straight to The Kind Worth Saving, so take your pick. Bringing back two of the characters whose stories began in the 2015 award-winning The Kind Worth Killing, Swanson weaves an entirely new mystery for private investigator Henry Kimball and Lily Kintner, who might best be described as Kimball’s favourite “frenemy”. Peter Swanson is well known for complex and clever plotting that’s designed to keep readers guessing. Now that he’s on his own, he’ll take any and all cases, so when Joan Whalen comes to hire him, Kimball is quick to accept the case. Most notably, however, Swanson feeds out information gradually throughout the novel, sometimes moving backwards in time to do so but more often through conversations between Joan and Richard, or through the thought processes and memories of the various narrators. Was there any way to continue the story without retconning the ending (because construction not having got to the well, and Kimball forgiving Lilly and covering up her crime was the stupidest thing I ever read- I get he's a creepy/stalker/ insta love character but not follow through with the consequences to the previous book felt insulting. Told from multiple perspectives changing with each chapter, this was a sneaky, suspenseful, twisted, thrilling, fast paced story that had me fully invested from start to finish.

The Kind Worth Saving follows Henry Kimball, who is now a private investigator after the events of The Kind Worth Killing. Worst of all, he suspects that to solve the case he has found himself embroiled in, it is likely he will have to go back and re-examine the worst day of his entire life, in hopes of finding answers.

The more he learns, however, the closer Waiting such a long period of time to release a sequel requires readers to remember the details of a book read eight years ago. A massive thank you to the team at Allen and Unwin for for a very early Christmas present with this ARC.

What I find irritating is when there are multiple narrators and they make no effort to have the voice of a character sound at all alike. The Kind Worth Saving" is the long-awaited sequel to "The Kind Worth Killing" that could easily be read as a standalone. The stories are completely separate and any references to what occurred in the previous book are either superficial or adequately explained. The story opens with Kimball being hired as a private investigator by Joan, who is certain her husband, Richard, is having an affair. He’d been a Massachusetts high school English teacher but left after a student pulled a gun and killed a classmate before turning the weapon on himself, leaving Kimball tormented by thoughts he could have prevented those deaths. Peter Swanson’s highly anticipated sequel introduces new characters, but also continues with Henry Kimball and Lily Kintner’s story. The first half of the book is really all about Henry, his past as a teacher and we get to know more about Joan. She tells him that her husband Richard is having an affair – she knows it for certain but she needs evidence to get a divorce, and she’s willing to pay Kimball the going rate to provide the proof she needs.

The Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson Book Marks reviews of The Kind Worth Saving by Peter Swanson

Yes, the same characters are present and accounted for, but there’s no significant character development from the first book.

These two have history of a complex kind, the nature of which is revealed and developed through The Kind Worth Saving. She is mesmerized by the cozy, firelit house, the large family, and the charming village of Clevemoor, but also by Adam Chapman, Emma’s aloof and handsome brother. Suddenly it feels like the past is repeating itself, and Henry must go back to one of the worst days of his life to uncover the truth. Henry and Joan have a shared history – they were both witnesses when the school loner killed another pupil in English class and then turned the gun on himself. In this spectacularly devious novel by New York Times bestselling author Peter Swanson, a private eye starts to follow a possibly adulterous husband, but little does he know that the twisted trail will lead back to the woman who hired him.
