About this deal

This high-octane space adventure is a stand-out read, whether or not you consider yourself a sci-fi fan. Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! The ship was turning gently, and as it turned, it revealed an enormous scorched rupture near one of the engines. There's a lot of books I've read in 2020 that I wanted to like way more than I actually did, and unfortunately I nearly ended up in a reading slump with this book.

And at the same time that you're doing that have a think about any words that you think might be useful. Of course, when her character development kicked in it was incredible and she quickly became very exciting to read from! However, they are surrounded by dangers, from meteor storms and ruthless space pirates to the terrifying, mysterious alien lifeform known as the Videshi. Magnificent middle grade sci-fi with a great range of characters, fantastic world-building, exciting premise, and believable chain of command.Overall though I thought it was a fun read which will keep sci-fi fans very happy and I would happily read any follow-ups. Thinking about the emotions you want to convey or elicit with your shot can help you to plan a powerful picture, and it’ll inform every stage of the photographic process.

If there's one thing I'm learning from this week it's that rivals feel a weird need to take each other's seats/absolutely hate when the other sits in their seat. To reach their new home requires their ship to 'jump' time zones and each time the ship jumps all families follow the protocol of going into artificial sleep. One of the things that Alastair does brilliantly, I think, is to use all of the elements and conventions of the genre as a vehicle to explore big ideas and tell stories that are fundamentally about people and human nature. Life on the ship quickly becomes routine for thirteen year old Beth, who attends school, meets new friends and makes an enemy out of Vihaan, the Captain’s arrogant son. As I said similarly in another review, sometimes you think you should have been named captain, but life is never that simple. You might have sidekicks or other friends or other characters in the book and you just want to put down everything that you can think about this person. As the journey progresses, Beth meets new friends and experiences life in space but all turned for the worst when all adults are put to sleep and are unable to be woken.

Every so often, everyone is put into a "sleep" when the ship needs to "jump" (the act of the ship moving from one place to another). I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve read some version of, “This isn’t the sort of thing I’d usually pick up, but I loved it. In one sentence, I would describe Orion Lost as the book version of the most insane game of Among Us ever.

And the other thing that I usually tell people when I recommend Orion Lost is that it has what are – and I say this with no hyperbole – some of the best twists I have ever read in a submission. Equipment: Unmodified Canon 1000D, 18-55mm zoom, SW Star Adventurer Mount Barnard loop - M42 - IC434 by David de Cuevas, Treize Vents, France.

Science fiction usually involves a world that is different to our own, perhaps set in space or on another planet. There are tensions between the children, some alarming encounters with aliens and – much more terrifying – space pirates, all made worse when Beth begins to suspect that the ship itself may not have their best interests at heart. It just felt like a lot of arguing and fixing the ship and finding out why Beth wasn’t a great leader. They are the sort of brilliantly devised, rug-pulling reveals that as a reader you’d normally be delighted to find once in a book – and Alastair delivers at least three of them. When Beth was told to go to the sleep pod immediately so the others could jump and when she got in she lost her memory and couldn't remember anything but eventually, everything came back to her. There isn’t anything in that is inappropriate but there is a bit of space tech and the book is quite chunky (360 pages) so if you don’t have a confident reader on your hands maybe wait six months or so.
