About this deal

Although it is extremely simplified it manages to maintain the philosophy and emotion of the original while being illustrated with Ito's unmatched horror. The other half portrayed Frankenstein’s monster as more vicious and heartless compared to the original version. There are plenty of depictions of Frankenstein’s monster that capture the poetry of this moment - Bernie Wrightson’s illustrated version immediately comes to mind - but this is the rare vision which makes the act of creation as violent and grotesque as an act of killing. With Frankenstein, Ito takes the introspective element of human horror and applies it to creativity. If there’s a theme which ties together this tome likely thrown together on the quick by an enterprising editor, it’s the fear that being too close to something will ruin everything.

Ito teamed up with Takashi Nagasaki and former diplomat Masaru Sato to create Yūkoku no Rasputin (2010–2012), based on Sato's personal experiences in Russia, for Big Comic. In these arcs, it is obvious how talented Junji Ito is in drawing readers in with graphic details that are disconcertingly scary and yet impossible to look away once you've started reading. But the twist at the end from what we assumed was Oshikiri’s madness makes it turn successful creepier.

That being said, all of the key players are in tact, the setting is accurate both in time and place, and Frankenstein's monster is as complex and tortured as his novel counterpart. Despite it being lengthier than his short stories Frankenstein did feel as though it ended abruptly. Whether that death was fake or not is another matter entirely that takes the story to darker places, again engulfed in personal insecurities. It still stands to represent our own biological imperfections and how our attempts at achieving the opposite are doomed to fail. It mostly keeps to bandages and big dirty pieces of clothing that do little to conceal his ugliness.

Ito’s Frankenstein is still Shelley’s Frankenstein, and together they make for a deeply unsettling kind of horror. And even the silliest of stories are still elevated by his sublime artwork, nobody draws horrifyingly messed up images like this guy. Ito’s Frankenstein looks like a massive version of HP Lovecraft but with the skin boiled off to expose the raw flesh, a kind of object that doesn’t quite create sympathy but rather a feeling that his pain in existence is so harsh that its comprehension would harm you. Junji Ito’s Frankenstein is a very humble adaptation of a horror classic that needs little embellishment to keep relevant. The rest is some short manga serials that are just as confusing and disturbing as the rest of Junji Ito's tales, featuring such horrors as alternate dimensions of killer children and melting people. The form to took a while to get used to (reading backwards was sometimes confusing) but not bad, it was just an adaption of Mary Shelly's 'Frankenstein'. And The Bog of Living Spirits is a very Japanese story - most Western teenage boys, swamped by the attention of girls in their school, would probably welcome it and have sex with them all, rather than run away!
