Strike's personal life is complicated. He has just split from his long term partner and fiancée, Charlotte Campbell, who immediately marries another man. He is closest to his half-sister Lucy (his mother's second child), with whom he grew up, though he has seven other half-siblings (the other children of Rokeby) and one half-brother who is the son of his mother and her last husband Jeff Whittaker. Even his relationship with Lucy is somewhat fraught, and Strike finds himself becoming closer to Robin, who has always wanted to be a detective, than he at first feels entirely comfortable with. What happens now, as they leave the restaurant is unexpected, startling and profoundly disturbing. Strike, has his arm around her waist to steady her after she slips on a slippery floor...."She likes the feel of him, bulky and warm beside her." He moves to kiss her, for the first time--after five years of restraint. "And unwittingly, Robin's expression moved from happiness to fear. He saw it and straightened up again." I recommend that you read what follows after you read the book unless you don’t have a sensitivity to “spoilers.” Robin goes undercover at the UHC and finds much unlawful activity and speaks to Will. She learns that he was not informed of his mother's death and that he has fathered a daughter inside the church.

International distribution and dates are currently unknown, but it seems likely to end up on HBO Max in the US, given that they have the rights to the previous episodes. He works closely with his assistant, Robin, later to become his partner in the series. They solve mysterious crime cases that not only lead to more danger but also challenge his boundaries. I think that this book could have been half the length (with fewer suspects) but it is only marginally longer than the last one, just as the Harry Potter books got longer and longer. This author never runs out of things to say! Personally, by the end of this one I could not care less about the identity of the killer, except that he might turn out to be a psychopath. (I admit that my wife greatly enjoyed taking note of each of the suspects.)

If you like a pure procedural or puzzle mystery, they may not be for you. Potterheads (fans of Harry Potter) and book readers everywhere are well aware of the series’ world-famous author, J.K.
