About this deal

Writing a simple but compelling board book for toddlers isn’t easy. Ms. Beer did an excellent job of plainly stating what she thought the smallest members of society should know about the beautiful diversity of family life while also including deeper meanings for the adults or older kids who will be reading this out loud to the little ones in their lives. Many people make the mistake of thinking that a family is an important thing – A family is not just that. A family is everything to a single individual. Your family should be the core of your life. Make time to see them every weekend and show them your love and affection. That’s what it means to truly love your family. I love my family. We might not say it verbally much, but we show our love in every other way possible. Family love does not need to be expressed verbally. We just know. I want to tell my family that I miss them, and I love them. The words may not come out, but each and every one of us knows that we love each other.

When I think about the kids we're raising, as a whole right now, I'm so goddamn hopeful for the future that I can't even really express it, for fear of losing my "unaffected internet witch" cool points (Note: I do not actually have any of those points). Students will continue their exploration of character by analyzing the characters’ feelings. In this unit, students focus on more nuanced feelings and explaining why a character feels the way they do. Many of the vocabulary words in this unit do not come directly from the texts, but instead offer more precise words students can use to articulate how a character is feeling. Students will also analyze character relationships and notice how relationships impact a character's feelings and actions, particularly in regard to family relationships. Noticing both character feelings and character relationships will help students determine the central message of the story. Identity 5: I see that the way my family and I do things is both the same as and different from how other people do things, and I am interested in both. Things to Know: While the author of this book is a white woman, it is still a lovely story featuring POC characters.

Love Makes a Family was a non-profit advocacy and assistance organization of families headed by LGBT people, and their friends, working for equal marriage and family rights in the United States. It was also the name of a former organization in Connecticut that disbanded in 2009 after achieving its aims. And we can say a lot of good things about our parents - the Boomers and Hippies, a lot of whom tried to do better in their own ways too - but self-reflection and re-examining the roles we all play in society and within families was not their strongest suit. Hell, depending on how old your parents were, you could've been raised with full on "emotions are evil, shut that shit down" Silent Generation-ers, and still you're out here attempting Gentle Parenting and letting your kid have a tantrum in the Target parking lot. I'm so proud of you!

Love Makes a Family, Inc. was founded in 1992 by Bonnie Tinker as an outgrowth of the making of a video of the same name on lesbian and gay Quaker families, [1] and incorporated in 1993 in connection with opposition to Ballot Measure 9 on the part of "a racially diverse group of sexual minorities in Oregon and Southwest Washington." [2] It is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Its activities began in support of families, with support groups for parents and children and then a talk show with Tinker on a Christian right-wing radio station, KKEY, a newsletter, a schools committee to speak with students and teachers, and increasing political activity. [3] Based on Tinker's view that "meaningful social change doesn’t take place with 50 percent plus one, but rather when communities are transformed," the group also has booths at the Oregon State Fair for marriage equality and for non-violence, and continues Tinker's "Open Hearts and Minds" workshop since her death in an accident in July 2009. Where would we be if not for all the love that we have received from our family? When it comes right down to it, our family is still our source of happiness, through good times and bad. Diversity 7: I can describe some ways that I am similar to and different from people who share my identities and those who have other identities. Families like to spend time together. Different families have different rituals and traditions that they do together.

I may move away, and I may start a new life elsewhere. Yet when I return, I know that my family will still welcome me with open arms. After all, they are my family, and I expect no less. Ask the richest people in the world what their true priorities are, and they will tell you that it’s their family. Such is the importance of a family to everyone. Everyone has a house, but it will not be a home without your family’s love and care. Home is where love is, now and always. What We Love: This book highlights diverse families and kiddos, touching on gender identity and sexuality. Book: Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match by Monica Brown (Children's Book Press, Bilingual edition, 2011)

A family is a strong circle filled with endless, unconditional love. Every crisis and obstacles faced by this closed circle will only make it stronger than ever before. Things to Know: While this book is highly inclusive, we would have loved to see even more representation like families with members who have disabilities, gender non conforming adults and kids, and gender variance in how characters dressed. As you prepare for this unit, consider the composition of your classroom and the different kinds of families represented in it. Make sure to think about the following things before teaching the unit: Love Makes A Family. Book format is also like a large board book, so this is really a good "all ages" kind of book. pix)Full of unique multimedia illustrations, My Abuelita is a funny and endearing story about a boy who has great admiration for his grandmother and the work she does.
