Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin comes from Radico Khaitan, one of the oldest whisky distillers in India. Susan: Great. We’re here to tell stories. So go ahead. Tell me the first one, well ,the second one.The most important thing would be how a bartender or how anybody else would try to experiment with an Indian gin. If we put ourselves in their shoes, how they would be experiencing it, we thought that, if they have an idea and they associate Jaisalmer with India and they think about India, they think that, India means maybe spicy. This London Dry Gin is produced by Berry Bros. & Rudd, the oldest spirit and wine merchant in London. Gin GinThe creators chose a theme of a gentleman wearing a bowler hat for the brand that would be recognized for its Englishness. The manufacturer uses 'Ugly Betty', a Lomond Still for distillation, which is the only one still being used. Introduced in 2010, this gin has gained popularity around the world. Their move was followed by the launch of Jaisalmer, their craft gin. With both Rampur and Jaisalmer, a conscious attempt has been made to work on an outside-in strategy, with building the brand first in international markets and then bringing them to India, said a consultant. You’ll notice that one essential ingredient in gin does not appear on the above list: juniper. While there is juniper in Jaisalmer, there’s clearly not much of it. The nose of the gin sees virtually no juniper showing at all, instead showcasing a kaffir lime-like character that is evidently driven by the lemon peel and lemongrass components. There are notes of orange peel and a lingering white wine character in play, followed by dusky, earthy notes — all alongside a waterfront note that I liken to crushed seashells.

A gin like no other, Colombo No. 7 is a distinctly Sri Lankan take on a London dry gin and is the first Asian made handcrafted gin. Marketed worldwide, it has its largest market in the US, followed by southern Europe. The main 3 botanicals it has after juniper are coriander, angelica root, and licorice. Amazingly, the batches of Jaisalmer Gin are tiny; it’s made in a traditional copper pot only 700-800 bottles at a time. Let that settle in for a second; A company that size, in a country with that many drinkers and only making their one and only gin, Jaisalmer, in less than a thousand units per batch. Jaisalmer is the first Indian craft gin from Radico Khaitan, and named after the historic city. Its flavours and aromas are cultured to evoke the heady imperial age of the Maharajas and Maharanis. Produced using traditional copper pot stills at a distillery at the foothills of the Himalayas which offers a consistent climate and pure mountain water perfect for gin production.

Susan: When you think India is such a huge country with so many different cuisines, with so many different spices, that to be able to pin it down to just seven of the 11 within India is an incredible job, really, because there are so many to choose from. Apart from that, we took licorice, caraway seeds, and of course, a beautiful juniper from Macedonia. The whole concept was that, as I told you in the beginning, to give India to the world. We tried to retain the soul flavor, juniper, but as well to give that spiciness, the refreshing floral tones of India, and hence this recipe of 11 botanicals was made as Jaisalmer.

Susan: I know I’ve been to India once and ,unfortunately, although we did travel throughout Rajasthan, we didn’t get a chance to go there, which I’m sad about. I’m sure he found all these other botanicals all over India. What was it about Jaisalmer that I know you said the vetiver and the coriander came from there, but was there anything else that you had to choose it as the name as well? Now, you mentioned that you released the gin in India at the end of last year. Is that now available all across India?

It’s a fried sweet milk-solid bowl. It’s brown in color and they infused gin into it and it was fabulous. People are not only experimenting gin with drinks. They are experimenting with drinks in Indian cuisine. That was amazing. It’s just a matter of time. Although the gin and tonic was born in India, Indians have historically had much more of an affiliation for whiskey. When do you think all of that changed?
