About this deal

WOW! Said the Owl is the bestselling board book about colours by Tim Hopgood, winner of the Best Emerging Illustrator, Booktrust Early Years Award.

A great way to introduce colours. Very different to the normal 'colour' learning books. Also children can join in with saying ''WOW' said the owl.' I spy colours: Go outside to your garden or an outside space. Look around and play ‘I spy colours’, where one person says “I spy with my little eye, something blue.” Your child has to guess what it is. Try it with other colours. Colour sorting: Collect different coloured items from around your house. This could include toys, craft materials, clothes and kitchen utensils. Ask your child to sort them into different colours and talk about what they have done. Find different pictures of objects / animals and sort them according to the colours that you can see. Lovely book to share with your toddler my little girl loves all the colours and has learnt to name them all. We also do loud and quiet voices while reading this story and have enjoyed looking at day and night. But despite the beauty of the daytime world, the little owl decides that the night-time stars are the most beautiful of all.

Fascinatingly, he collects textures from unusual places – the clouds in Wow! Said the Owl have a pattern he scanned in from the inside of an envelope from his bank! What sort of creative mind comes up with that idea? Every time we read Wow! Said the Owl now – which is to say, several times a week – I’ll pay special attention to those patterned clouds and be reminded how a clever mind can see creative potential in the most mundane objects. Little owl is the only character in the book and thestorystarts by explaining that owls stayawake during thenight before it introduces little owl’s very ‘un-owl-like’ behaviour. Throughout the day little owlsees seven different colours, some in the sky, some in the trees and flowers but also when it gets dark. Useful that they also use the correct colour names rather than 'purple' to expand their knowledge and vocabulary. Wow! Said The Owl is a simple, easy to read story with beautifully illustrated double spreads. Little owl’s reaction to all the beautiful colours she sees is simply ‘Wow!’ and children enjoyjoining in with therepetition, thisrepetition also makes this a great book for beginner readers. I liked this book as it had a nice story to it whilst also providing a clear range of colours for baby to look at. The colours are mainly pastel which is a nice contrast to most childrens books.

Everyone knows that owls are nocturnal but one curious little owl decides to take a long nap at night so she can stay awake during the day. Words for Life is created by the National Literacy Trust and supported by UK publishers with funding for its creation from the DfE and Kindred 2. Authors / Illustrators I find it really interesting to hear what authors and illustrators enjoy reading or have enjoyed reading with children. In this category you will find recommendations written by authors and illustrators along with books that they have written and / or illustrated.
