This much-loved spirit has a distinct flavor profile and a history to match. The time, care, dedication, and craftsmanship that goes into Bourbon make it quite unlike anything else you’ll spot in the liquor cupboard. In 1964, Congress even declared Bourbon “America’s Native Spirit.” The next step differentiates Bourbon from whiskey. The mixture is pumped into a fermentation vat with yeast and, commonly, a sour mash mix. The mash is then distilled – mostly twice – to remove impurities and increase the strength of the liquid. Taste: The taste has a masterful start with powerful dry vanilla notes in perfect harmony with hints of honey amid the strong caramel. The long, creamy caramel holds the fort until some late soft peppers arrive to spice things up. The underlying dryness amid the spice and honey really makes for bourbon that should suit all tastes and one to keep the discerning whiskey drinker almost purring with delight. The bottle is wrapped with an aged paper wrapper that has some basic information about the contents, including the hand-written details of where and when the whiskey comes from.Usually, adding a little bit of ice washes out the weaker flavors while toning down the more annoying or richer aspects. For a bitter or overly dark whiskey this can be a good thing, but for something that is already pretty well balanced and delicious when taken neat, it can be a real buzzkill.

Before you start hunting for a bottle of your own, here are 15 things you need to know about Blanton’s. It was the world’s first “single-barrel” bourbon. Then, the barrels are charred, offering a smoky environment that almost caramelizes the liquid. The standard barrel size is 263 liters and weighs 225 kilos when full. What’s the difference between Bourbon and Whiskey? Elijah Craig has a particular legacy in the world of bourbon drinking, and the Elijah Craig Small Batch provides a brilliant continuation of just that. And there’s no ‘right’ way to enjoy Bourbon, but there are certainly ways of drinking the liquor that make for a more enjoyable experience. Woodford Reserve’s Baccarat will forever – rightly – be a talking point in the bourbon world, a fusion of sophistication and complexity with a brilliant light copper coloring. The difference between Baccarat and the brand’s other offerings comes from a few final touches: an extra period aging in XO Cognac barrels, the handmade crystal decanters it’s served in, and its insanely velvety, fruity, sweet, citrus-tinged taste.

Arguably, the most crucial step of the Bourbon production process comes next: aging. Whiskey must be aged for at least two years before it can be called “straight whiskey”. A spirit distilled for a shorter period of time is known as “white dog” and has a paler, almost clear coloring and a sharp flavor. Whiskey is a spirit distilled from fermented grain mash (wheat, rye, barley, and corn) and then aged in wooden barrels. Age/Age Statement: Though not required, many distilleries display their whiskey offerings with the amount of time they’ve spent aging. Generally, the more years the liquor has spent in its barrels, the better – although there are some exceptions. Noting the success of brands like Four Roses, they saw the need to produce a premium brand of whiskey. Drawing inspiration from a former master distiller of their facility named Col. Albert Blanton, they created a new line of bourbon that did something new: nothing. Literally, nothing. No blending or mixing the contents of the barrel. Instead, the contents of selected barrels that were of a superior quality were poured directly into the bottles and shipped out. As the saying goes, “All Bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is Bourbon.” But there’s more to it than just semantics. If you’re a whiskey (and especially Bourbon) drinker, you need to know the differences.

Proof: Another term for measuring the alcoholic content of a beverage. The proof is double the alcohol by volume (ABV) measurement. Believe it or not, up until just a few years ago, it was relatively easy to buy a bottle of Blanton’s any time of the year. Fast forward to today, and you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking Blanton’s is the hardest bourbon to find in America. Slowly over time, its position has been elevated to one of the hottest bourbons in the marketplace, with stores being bombarded with calls on a daily basis and people talking about Blanton’s as if it’s the best bourbon currently being produced. While there’s nothing wrong with a bourbon becoming the latest “gotta have it bottle,” I do question if people understand what makes Blanton’s unique, and why that uniqueness also limits its overall potential. Each voyage of Jefferson’s Ocean typically crosses the equator four times. Drink it neat while wondering exactly how far your bottle has traveled before it reached you.

Taking a whiff of the glass, it smells just as a nicely balanced and well-saturated bourbon should. There’s some darker notes up front, starting with something that’s just on the edge between “toasted caramel” and “charred wood.” From there, a little bit of brown sugar and vanilla joins the mix, along with some cinnamon spice and some fruity aspects like cherry, fresh pear, and a little hint of apple. Like the “all natural” on your bologna or “farm fresh,” quite possibly also on your bologna, “single-barrel” isn’t a legally defined term in the United States. Yes, that leaves a lot of wiggle room for creative interpretation. So far, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau ( TTB) hasn’t set up a legal definition. So for now, we’re working on the honor system. Legal or not, “single barrel” still really matters.

Bulleit Bourbon is a little sharper than most, thanks to its high rye content. It’s an attention grabber, with a pungent and powerful taste and plenty of contrasting notes. You’ll taste caramel most prominently when sipping this bourbon, rounded off with an expert hint of spicy cinnamon and ginger. Age International was sold in 1992 to the Japanese spirits company Takara Shuzo, who still owns it to today. ProductBlanton’s Original Single Barrel Bourbon has a storied history that ties together many namesakes of the Buffalo Trace distillery. Originally, Colonel Albert B. Blanton was the president of the George T. Stagg Bourbon Distillery, which is now known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery until 1952. During that period Elmer T. Lee worked under Blanton. As Lee was nearing retirement, he decided to bring forth one last product. A year before retiring, Lee brough to market the first commercial single barrel bourbon and named it Blanton’s after the late Colonel.
