Some guys, the first night at boot camp, cried themselves to sleep,” remembered Scott Grimes, who played Technical Sergeant Donald Malarkey. An Interview with Damian Lewis". Public Broadcasting Service. 2002. Archived from the original on 15 February 2006 . Retrieved 12 February 2010.

He played Jeffrey Archer in the TV special Jeffrey Archer: The Truth. Since 2004, he has appeared in a number of films, as well as the 2005 BBC TV adaptation of the Shakespeare comedy Much Ado About Nothing, as part of the ShakespeaRe-Told season. Lewis played the role of Yassen Gregorovich in the film Stormbreaker. In 2006, he appeared in Stephen Poliakoff's BBC drama Friends and Crocodiles. He has appeared on BBC's Have I Got News for You as guest host several times; on 10 November 2006, 1 May 2009, 18 November 2010, 27 April 9 November 2012 and 31 October 2014. [ citation needed] He also appeared in Jonathan Kent's production of Hamlet, playing Laertes. This production was seen by Steven Spielberg, who later cast Lewis as Richard Winters in Band of Brothers (2001), the first role of several that required him to have a credible American accent. Cambridge Jones's "Talking Pictures" appears at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts through Nov. 27. The exhibit will launch in early 2011 at the Chateau Marmont before moving to The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery March 3. The other was led by British veterans in The Daily Mail, who decried the America-centric story. No matter that Easy Company’s story was, by definition, mostly focused on American soldiers, or that nobody had actually seen the series yet – it was blasted as “an absolute disgrace and an insult to the millions of brave Britons who helped to win the war”. Miraculously, two escaped, triggering one of the most-extraordinary Nazi-hunting operations, in an unrelenting bid to seek out those responsible for the deaths of their comrades.HBO’s miniseries Band of Brothers told the true story of Easy Company and their time in WWII. However, one battle was left out of the series. Damien Lewis, in this online event, will tell the tale of behind these group of soldiers in a story of courage, betrayal and the quest for justice. Breathtaking and exhaustively researched, ‘SAS Band of Brothers’ is based upon a raft of new and unseen material provided by the families of those who were there. But six SABU-70 raiders survived the ambush, the deliberate neglect in hospital, the torture, and execution. When the last of them had reached home, it was time to bring the culprits to justice. The hunt for the killers forms the last part of the book, the author going beyond those directly involved in the execution of the SABU-70 raiders (of the 100 or so SAS raiders captured after D-Day, only a handful survived the war) and looks at the SAS’s own War Crimes Investigation Team (WCIT). With plenty of exciting shows set to premiere in 2022, including The Staircase and former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat’s adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife, HBO is hoping to continue its trend of successful TV series. From popular series like Sex And The City to Euphoria to Game Of Thrones, HBO already has plenty of impressive series under its belt. Surviving the disbandment of the SAS in September 1945, the WCIT continued to operate secretly alongside the War Office’s own war-crimes investigation unit and brought to trial the six men responsible for the execution of the members of SABU-70. All six were found guilty – three were executed, two were imprisoned, and one was returned to the French for a further trial.

Damian Lewis interview with Marie Claire, 25 February 2008. accessed 14 January 2009. Actor Damian Lewis, who portrayed Winters in the series, told CNN that Winters’ support for him during the production was “generous and unstinting. I’ll never forget his rallying cry to me to ‘hang tough!’Stephen McCole, who played Winters’s unpopular successor, ‘Moose’ Heyliger, told the Dead Eyes podcast that he found himself “getting ghosted left right and centre”. He added: “Not just on screen, but when we were sitting around waiting, having cups of tea, anything like that – people were just riding me, treating me like s–t. I thought, ‘F–k these guys. I f—–g cannot stand this job. I want it to end.’” a b c Collins, Lauren (2016). "Blue Blood, Blue Collar: Damian Lewis's transformations," The New Yorker, 18 January 2016. Retrieved 2 April 2017. The story at the heart of this book is so good that almost anyone who can tell a good story could tell it. It's about a group of British paratroopers, what we'd call special forces today, who made two jumps into France following the Normandy invasion. The first mission is a success; the second one... not so much. I can’t wait to get started, I’m really excited. I’ve played at a few festivals and done a lot of London gigs in the last year, but I’m so excited to play at these venues with a wonderful heritage and I’m really looking forward to getting out there to play my new album, Mission Creep.

On Saturday 28th June 2014 at the Chalke Valley History Festival, Damian Lewis discussed his experiences of being a part of the critically acclaimed HBO WW2 mini-series, Band of Brothers. Kit, Borys (10 April 2018). "Damian Lewis to Play Controversial Ex-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in Drama". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved 9 December 2021. This summer, Lewis was made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to drama and charity. The author also discusses the role of 190 and 620 Squadrons, flying four-engine Short Stirling bombers which, although obsolete as heavy bombers, performed superbly in their new role of dropping special forces and agents behind enemy lines, and undertaking airdrops to resistance groups. The skill of pilots and crews is highlighted, culminating in the audacious extraction of SABU-70 from Étampes aerodrome by a C47 – truly the stuff of Hollywood. Lewis and his family left the UK in 2007 to live in Los Angeles while he worked on the NBC-TV crime drama Life. After completion of that series' final episode in 2009, they returned to the UK to live in a Victorian townhouse in Tufnell Park, north London. [3] As of March 2020 [update] they also had a house near Sudbury in Suffolk. [46]

These guys really had it rough. Every turn was danger and the threat of death and torture. They showed out for a cause bigger than themselves. It was very admirable what they did. It is impossible to fathom the depths of courage and ingenuity the human being is capable of. I am filled with the greatest compassion, admiration and love for men and women who have gone to such lengths to put themselves in mortal danger to fight for human dignity against incorrigible, evil humans who delight in the suffering of their fellow mankind.
