About this deal

This one mounts on the top of the chassis, also on its adaptor plate. The SATA cable from the first drive routes neatly under this. FreeNAS — Supports Windows SMB, Apple AFP, Time Machine, and Unix NFS, as well as FTP and WebDAV with many advanced features & add-ons. See screenshots. In short (and not considering any RAM requirments of any other services running on your FreeNAS box), 8GB RAM is minimum and sufficient for 8 drives. Then, for any additional drive, an additional minimum of 1GB per drive is recommended. Note that those requirements/recommendations are not based on a RAM-per-storage-capacity metric, but rather based on RAM-per-drive. The challenge here is that these chips felt a bit like no-mans land. We know that the eight high-speed cores offer excellent performance, but it is not exactly inexpensive, it is not exactly low power. We do not get RDIMM support for higher capacities for a server that could use that much power with enough memory. Maybe it was the fact that we had just done over two dozen pieces on the series, but I just did not feel this was the right fit for me especially given the lower-cost pre-built solutions out there based on Xeon E-2200 series. I saw the U-Nas case listing in GPB from the UK and it was probably the same you bought, it had the same disclaimer. I'm still regretting not getting that case as it's really hard to find here in Europe. I want to replace my Drobo DAS with NAS and likely to get the Synology 8-bay 1821+ though I noticed you mentioned a new one coming out that will be more powerful. I have an ASUS Creator B 660 motherboard with both 1 gbe and 2.,5 gbe and want to connect the Synology to the 2.5 gbe for LAN directly to PC to get 2.5 gbe. Won’t edit off the Synology but want to have fast storage. For more information, including part numbers, we have the rest of this article. Getting Started: Choosing the Form Factor All NAS systems in this guide are compatible with (and can be accessed by) Windows, Mac, Android and Linux operating systemsSuch compact cases with little space “behind” the PSU are a prime example of the one disadvantage modular PSUs have in such space-constrainted situations: A need for additional space for those plugs there. The fans utilized are 3-pin units. We would have preferred here if the fans were 4-pin PWM units which allows easier control of the fan speed. In 2019, virtually every motherboard that one would use in this chassis has 4-pin fan headers. Ultimately, the case has become important enough to me that I made a promise to myself when I turned the DIY NAS and EconoNAS builds into something I was repeating on a regular basis: each time I built a DIY NAS and I was envious of the case, I’d acquire that case and transplant my own NAS into it!

The AUDHEID NAS 8-Bay K7 is an excellent choice for an extended NAS in a compact form factor that is ITX compatible. MATX and ATX motherboards are supported, and it has room for up to eight 3.5-inch hot-swap drives for high-end media centers or NAS. By enabling C-States in the motherboard BIOS you can configure Intel “T” class CPUs to run at 25 watts when idle. Here is a full list of compatible processors. RAM/Memory Cable clearance is very tight but everything fits. The fully modular power supply is almost a must here. This video is exactly what I needed as I am looking to set up a home media server for my family–which will need multiple 1080p streams and 4k in the near future. Alost every device in my house is Apple based (MacBooks, iPhones, iPads). So I am wondering how Apple compatible this unit is? OpenMediaVault — Based on Debian, supports SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. See screenshots.

Fractal Design Node 804 ( specs): Is a bit larger but also supports Micro ATX motherboards, which opens up a whole new form factor of potential motherboards to consider. It has internal 8 x 3.5” HDD bays, 2 x 2.5” HDD bays, and it’s very price competitive, which makes it a very attractive option to consider. Very good article! I am interested in building a smaller one as I only plan on 4 SAS 16B drives. Is there an alternative to the Silverstone DS380 Mini- ITX 8-bay hot-swap SAS/SATA Case? That is, a 4-Bay version but still able to accommodate the rest hardware? Please help with words of wonderful re-assurance of Synology having a present and Future with SEAGATE IRONWOLF Pro 18, 20 and 22 TB drives. https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/product/data-center-drives/ultrastar-sata-series/product-manual-ultrastar-7k6000-sata-oem-spec.pdf Of course this is meaningless if it’s damaged, so the next step was to see what condition it was in. I tentatively popped a fresh FreeNAS 11.2 USB in the port and hit the power button, to my delight, it booted first time – not a single error on POST or Boot. Next I read the SMART data on HGST 6TB drives. ~2500 operating hours, 62 power cycles, no errors. Nearly new!
