OVEREMOTIONAL: your new queer YA obsession! : Fenne, David

When Ven’s plans for a great summer and a great life are thrown into jeopardy, nothing will stop her from pursuing her dreams. Exploring disability and resilience through artistic expression, Sing If You Can’t Dance is empowering, genuine and memorable in equal measure. Highly recommended for teens in KS3 and KS4. Of course it's also a queer story. And not just in a "this character happens to be gay" way. It's integral part of the plot.Well, funny you should ask! I’ve just handed in book 2 in the OVEREMOTIONAL Trilogy! The gang will be heading off to London for university, but not everything is as it seems . . . [CFi ed: I didn’t notice that it was first in a trilogy and I’m so pleased that we’ll meet them again a little older, with the new challenges of uni!] I feel like there are parts that felt muddled, like they just needed more trimmed off. I found some of Fairburn's logs a bit overwritten, I understand the style is different to the other POVs but it could have been more succinct.

Another fave was rookie Agent Wren, whose enthusiasm leads to more than one awkward (but highly entertaining) conversation with her supervisor—trust me, it’s pretty much impossible not to find her antics a little amusing. Fenne is an author, actor and improviser based in south-east London. He came to London in 2012 for drama school, studying American Theatre Arts at Rose Bruford College. He trained abroad for half a year at Syracuse University in New York. He is also an improv comedian, running a long-form improv theatre company, Pinch Punch. When seventeen year old Steven’s kisses a boy for the first time, the boy’s head explodes. Not the most romantic first kiss. He flees his town and runs to a boring dead end town named Grunsby-on-Sea to make sure he never harms anyone again with his emotional powers. Where Freya goes, her boyfriend Marcus and American friend Troy soon follow. Together, they are determined to find out more about this organisation and what "neutralising" someone like Steven might mean. By chance, Steven meets a handsome stranger who claims to share his powers and who offers to teach Steven how to control them. The book reads from the main characters points of view so you really get to know them quite well. I enjoyed Steven and Troy but I found Freya irritating in parts. For me, the way I felt towards the characters only shows the skill of David Fenne's depth of character development writing. But Grunsby isn't as dead as it first seems. And when his best friend Freya turns up (unimpressed at his sudden departure) and the two are chased round the town by a mysterious women trying to accost them, they realise Steven could be in grave danger; fears made more real when Freya's boyfriend reports a stranger from DEMA has been snooping around enquiring about Steven. As Steven and Freya investigate who or what is looking for him, a chance encounter with a stranger with similar powers to his who offers to help could be the answer to Steven's predicament. Despite Freya's warnings, emotions may cost Steven his life and that of his friends.

OVEREMOTIONAL by David Fenne (Paperback) – Queer Lit OVEREMOTIONAL by David Fenne (Paperback) – Queer Lit

This is the story of a teenage boy named Steven Percival , who is known as `Percy' to his close friends and family. Steven is seventeen years old and he has a gift that he does not want. This is because whenever he has strong emotions about anything, strange things begin to happen around him. This gift affects his friends and other people close by because it makes them behave strangely. He also fears that he may have accidently killed another young man because of his powers. This is why he runs away to a small seaside town called Grunsby-On-Sea because he thinks that nobody will look for him there. Now, I have not seen any reviewers give spoilers for the whole book on IF this fully occurs or not, there is another love interest (is the only love interest???), Troy, who is the same age as the MC and I love him to bits.

I loved the superpowers/ fantasy element. It's reminiscent in parts to the Simon Snow trilogy but this definitely stands alone and in its own right as a unique book. Please note: This review may not be reproduced or quoted, in whole or in part, without explicit consent from the author and myself.
