About this deal

The LG G1 has a motion interpolation feature, also known as the 'Soap Opera Effect'. It can interpolate lower-frame rate content up to 120Hz. It looks good on our test pattern with only a bit of artifacting, but there are more noticeable artifacts in real content. This makes LG's own AI Sound Pro setting a much better option for most content. This does amp up to take on loud moments, as well as somehow make the sound fill the room more. Alexa also worked with the few requests I lobbed at her – and, conveniently, I could call her up without using the remote. Both OK Google and Alexa were a little tardy in their responses, though. The 4K TVs with the best viewing angle - Which? News

The LG G1 has decent HDR peak brightness. This is where the evo panel provides an improvement from the LG GX OLED. Although it's one of the brightest OLEDs available, the replacement model, the LG G2 OLED, is even brighter. It gets bright enough to make small highlights stand out, but once again, it has an aggressive ABL, so large areas are dimmer. The EOTF follows the target curve pretty well until there's a sharp roll off at its peak brightness, but some dark scenes are slightly too dark. Its ability to maintain stable colour and luminance in the vertical viewing angle tests was excellent, too, which makes sense when the G1 is designed to hang on your wall and display works of art when you're not watching anything. These differences, along with a slightly richer, more refined HDR-content colour palette, are more consistently noticeable when playing HDR console and PC games than they are with typical video. The only issue with the design, perhaps, is that most people actually don't wall-mount their TV, but may well still want to get their hands on the G1 series' unique high brightness panel. If that sounds like you, be prepared to pay the extra for those optional support feet - or a new tripod-style Gallery floorstand LG has introduced for 2021. There’s Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for automatically putting the TV into its Game mode when it detects a gaming signal, while the HGiG standard improves HDRtone-mapping for a more consistent performance. I did notice more detail in the darker parts of an image than I remember seeing before. This sound configuration also reminds us that the LG G1 follows all of LG’s recent OLEDs by carrying a built-in Dolby Atmos sound system. That’s not the only Dolby connection, either, for the set additionally supports the Dolby Vision HDR format. This adds extra scene by scene picture information that compatible TVs can use to deliver more dynamic picture quality results.

LG OLED65G26LA | 65 inch OLED Evo 4K Ultra HD HDR Smart TV

Without a 2020 OLED to compare it to, it’s hard to make an exact judgement. However, the LG G1 proffers a very good sense of fine detail with faces (beards, stubble, crows feet and so on), with no particular softness or noise evident in problematic areas such as mouths or eyes – faces are full of character. Next, we measure for luminance and colour changes at 10-degree horizontal intervals up to 55 degrees, and 10-degree vertical intervals up to 30 degrees. Colours in SDR content take a well-balanced and natural approach, with skin tones varied and tonally well done. Colours are deftly portrayed – there was barely an image that didn’t look effortlessly refined in its colour depth, hue and definition. It’s a lovely looking image. In terms of sound, AI Sound Enhancement now has height virtualisation and there’s a new Auto Volume Levelling feature that’s designed to reduce jarring volume differences as you switch between different apps and sources. The AI Sound Pro mode follows the lead of the AI Picture Pro mode by seeking to optimise incoming audio of all types to the capabilities of the TV’s speaker system – and it mostly works very well. It instantly increases the sound’s dynamic range; makes the sound project further away from the TV’s bodywork; gives the sound a stronger ‘forward’ presence rather than it appearing to only exist behind the screen; and takes on those big movie moments with plenty of guts and enthusiasm. Not many 48 to 50-inch TVs managed four stars and, once again, we've got a split between luminance and colour deviation.

LG OLED65G1 Evo OLED TV review | What Hi-Fi?

But there will be some who are drawn to the minimalist, picture frame-like appearance of the G1 and wouldn’t dream of adding a soundbar to this set-up. Those people will simply have to accept that the audio performance will not hit anything like the same cinematic heights as the picture. Verdict This is where the also new Cinematic Movement option comes in. This doesn’t reduce judder as much, but avoids pretty much all digital processing ‘nasties’. So for me it’s the better option with 24p movie sources.

The speediness has a positive effect – reaction time for starts in Moto GP 2021 went from average to super-snappy, and control over the bike was more responsive to the point where it felt like I’d been handed an unfair advantage. LG says it’s possible to drive latency down to 9.6ms for 60Hz content in Boost mode, but it still worked out at 12.5ms. While it makes sense these days to shift the webOS focus to providing recommended content curated from across supported apps rather than making users explore content on a per-app basis, the layout and 'weighting' of the new home screen doesn't feel quite right. The three link options along the top of the screen in particular feel like they're been given more weight than they really warrant. But what is the Evo panel bringing to the table? By changing the OLED panel construction and adding a new luminous element – and combining it with the new Gen4 processor – LG says it has managed to create a ‘brighter, sharper, punchier image’. That’s great in theory, but some service providers are resistant to having their content included in such aggregators. Sure enough, Netflix is missing from the recommendations on LG’s home menu. The intelligence of the recommendations seems questionable, too: understandably, the TV hasn’t learnt our specific tastes in the relatively short time we've had with it so far, but why are shows such as Teletubbies and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, which are intended for very young children, recommended so prominently at 8pm on a Monday evening?

LG G1 OLED Evo (OLED55G1) review: Picture perfect | Trusted

If you comeacross a different type of panel or your LG G1 doesn't correspond to our review, let us know, and we'll update the review. Note that some tests like gray uniformity may vary between individual units. As usual with a premium LG TV, the OLED G1 supports the Dolby Vision and HLG formats of high dynamic range (HDR) technology, alongside the industry standard HDR10 format. There is no support for the rarer (in source terms) HDR10+ format.

We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. Filmmaker mode preserves the creative intent of films and TV shows by disabling motion processing and other enhancements. It should be noted that Filmmaker mode reflects the environment a film was graded in, so it’s best viewed in darker rooms. FMM works across SDR, HDR10 and HLG formats. It also drives a new version of LG’s AI Picture Pro automatic picture processing system. This includes new AI elements (developed by running a huge array of images through a neural network) designed to adjust images based on the type of content they contain.
