About this deal

Rae's best friend from childhood, Rae considers her to be physically perfect - something that Rae thinks she'll never be - and Rae often finds Chloe's struggles superficial and unnecessary. Throughout the series, Rae pretends to be friends with Chloe because she feels a sense of guilt for the way she sometimes thinks about her. It is also possible that Rae wants to continue being a member of Chloe's group of friends, as she enjoys having them around. She begins to explore Chloe's reasong for her actions when she takes her diary in series two, which brings them closer together. I have to say, it's the most bizarre, wonderful experience you could possibly have, watching something like that. I think the team at Tiger Aspect have done such a fantastic job, I think Tom Bidwell, who wrote it, has made something wonderful from it. I love what he's done.

With the downs come the ups, as well, and My Mat Fat Diary does well to show the integral importance of reaching out to people and searching for help when it seems like the world is against you. For a perceived ‘teen’ show, My Mad Fat Diary is incredibly mature, and handles these issues head-on. Throughout the three series of the show, the scripts consistently sizzle with witty dialogue. This consistency is probably down to the fact that the total sixteen episodes of Mad Fat Diary were written by a small pool of only four writers. it wasnt bad, just not what i was expecting! The writing was good and funny for a 16 year olds diary! That’s what, in an ideal world, makes social media such a useful tool Earl suggests – it can bring together all sorts of people from all over the place and show them they’re not on their own. What’s less helpful though, is “the fallacy of this perfect adolescence. That really needs to be shot out of the water because it’s nonsense.”

When Earl was a teenager in the eighties, she didn’t have access to the mental health support that’s around today. If she had, she tells me, “I think I could have been happier and, I hate to say it, more successful in life generally, because a lot of my coping mechanisms weren’t always very healthy, they were necessary, but not healthy.” Becoming a mother between the publication of the two volumes made the difference, she says. “ My Madder Fatter Diary was written after I’d had a child and I thought do I want my kid to see that? Do I want to share that? I thought, no.” There are two main problems for Rae during the series: the obstacles she faces because of her weight, and the obstacles she faces in her discovery of sex, love and friendship. In Episode 2, Rae has her first sexual experience when she kisses Archie. However, he later turns out to be gay and nothing romantic happens between them for the remainder of the series.

Epstein, Robert (20 January 2013). "TV review: My Mad Fat Diary - Whoever said that fat was funny?". The Independent. London . Retrieved 26 June 2013. You need to go into this book separating it from the TV show. The show is sheer brilliance and the people reading this book because of it clearly agree or you wouldn't be making the effort. The book is the diary of a teenage girl - a 17 yo girl at that. We're all the centres of our own universe at that age. Rae initially has a crush on Archie; from the moment she sees him, she can't stop thinking about him. In Episode 2, Archie asks Rae on a date and they kiss, but it is later revealed that Archie is gay. For the remainder of the series, Rae and Archie are close friends and nothing romantic happens between them. This book was bit of a let down, really. I just finished the BBC series based on this book and it is brilliant and makes me cry and makes me laugh and I'm in love with all the characters and their realtionships, but the book was just...not enough. I am aware that these are Rae Earl's original diary entries only edited a bit, so I didn't a expect a story with an exceptional plot and no loose ends, but still, the abrupt ending was I bit weird. Thanks to My Mad Fat Diary, we know the story of Earl’s life. Sort of. The memoir, an alternately uproarious and heartbreaking account of Earl’s struggles with her mental health, weight and friendships and sex, covers her sixth form years between 1989 and 1991. “I know I seem like a chronic oversharer—and I am!” Earl laughs, but those two volumes don’t tell the whole story.

Rae's feelings towards her group of friends fluctuate throughout the series. As individual ties with each member change, Rae is forced to evaluate her sense of self and the reasons she has for being a part of the group. Rae sometimes thinks she only hangs out with them becuase she is desperate to meet "cool people". Do you get letters from angst-ridden teens, young people who are unhappy with themselves or undergoing mental health issues? I'd originally started keeping a diary in the early 80s after seeing Ghostbusters, because I was so excited, but then I gave it up after about a year, and burnt it a few years later because it was full of nonsense. Then I started a diary in January 1989, principally because I needed to rant to somebody, I needed something I could confide in completely confidentially - despite hiding it in the most obvious place in the world, under my bed. I was convinced my mum would never think of looking there! I just needed something to talk to every night that was just mine.
