Originally intended for use with our own built separation toilets, especially for the more compact ones, this separation insert is now also available for the DIY sector.
Urine separation is the single most important factor in any composting toilet and an integral part of all our eco-toilet systems.A urine diverting toilet seat is a really cool device which basically funnels the pee away into one container and the poo into a separate container. We always keep a small bottle of water next to our composting toilet for this purpose. The separet divider inserts come from Sweden. That is, from the country where the composting toilet/dry toilet is very widespread and popular.
If you want to build your own composting toilet, you will need a urine separator to collect solids and urine separately. Thanks to the urine separation, both the smell and the volume of the waste that must be disposed of are reduced. What comes out of toilets is air from the 50mm pipe that is pulled out of the toilet space and urine from a 32mm pipe behind the toilet. If the toilet is used in permanent housing by 2 people, you need to empty the container for the fixed once a week. Urine is passed to an external container which is emptied when needed. Enzymatic urea hydrolysis can cause a number of problems, for example, deposition of the products formed. According to the composition, these scaling substances are classified as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate, MgNH 4PO 4·6H 2O), 4 hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca 10(PO 4) 6(OH) 2), 38 and potassium struvite (struvite-(K), KMgPO 4·6H 2O). 39 In particular, the reaction between Mg 2+, PO 4 3−, NH 4 + and H 2O produces struvite ( eqn (2)), the reaction between PO 4 3−, Ca 2+ and OH − produces HAP ( eqn (3)), and the reaction between K +, Mg 2+, PO 4 3− and H 2O produces potassium struvite ( eqn (4)). Struvite deposition often occurs spontaneously at a pH of 7–8, and then HAP sediment occurs at a higher pH. 38,40 This may be related to the difference between supersaturation, 41 because the saturation of struvite is 4.33 × 10 −14, whereas the saturation of HAP is 2.91 × 10 −58. These precipitates are found attached to urinal traps, drain lines and storage tanks during the excretion, collection and storage of urine, causing a significant inconvenience during urine transportation. Another disadvantage of urea hydrolysis is the unpleasant odor. There is an equilibrium between NH 4 + and NH 3, and an equilibrium between NH 3 solution and NH 3 gas, whose main driving force is pH. 4 When the pH is between 4 and 7, ammonia nitrogen transforms between NH 4 + and NH 3 ( eqn (5)). When the pH is higher than 7, the NH 3 dissolved in the liquid will convert to NH 3 gas and escape into the air ( eqn (6)), which continuously causes an unpleasant smell. The urine decay process is another name for these processes. The smell of urine grows stronger as the process progresses, and more scaling is produced. Nevertheless, cleaning should be as gentle as possible so as not to damage the particularly smooth surface. With the urine diverter in effect, your liquid waste will go one direction and your solid waste is go elsewhere. Maintenance requires a much more responsible and committed approach than conventional wastewater systems.
