There are two options for heating and lighting and it is for the keeper to decide which type best suits their own requirements: A sunlight UVA/UVB desk lamp that will keep your pet warm. Tortoises are cold-blooded animal that are used to living in hot environments in the wild. These lamps provide artificial sunlight essential for proper growth. Natural or artificial sunlight helps keep the bones and shell strong and helps the body absorb calcium. The TPG do not recommend the lamp being clamped to the side of the table as the direction of light will mean it will shine directly into the tortoise's eyes and potentially damage its vision. Also, it is important that the keeper doesn't look directly into the UVB lamp, as UVB can harm human eyesight. The tortoise is an ectotherm: in other words it is cold blooded, and it relies on temperature to maintain optimum health and wellbeing andtherefore it needs to be able to thermoregulate (adjust its temperature). This means that it needs to be able tomove fromareas of higher or lower temperatures set within its normal thermal range in all parts of the vivarium. The confines of an enclosed vivarium usually result in a similar temperature in all parts of the vivarium, and so make thermoregulation virtually impossible to achieve, and invariably the tortoise will suffer if kept this way over a long period of time. Tortoise tables are a popular choice for tortoises. They are best to be kept in the corner of a room out the way of any drafts. Tortoise tables are great enclosures for kids, as they are open they are more interactive. They can be fed and handled in the table rather than keep getting it out. As a general guide to size, a minimum table size of approximately 1m x 600mm (3' x 2') is suitable for hatchlings, but if made to a size of 2m x 600mm (6' x 2') this will also accommodate juvenile tortoises as they continue to grow and develop. If the table is made from wood; either line the base and a few inches up the sides with a waterproof liner such as pond liner, or seal the table with a waterproof, animal safe, sealant.

UVB lighting is essential towards the health and well-being of all reptiles. Tortoises are essentially ‘solar powered’ in that they require the suns rays to function. We include essential heating and lighting by way of a combined Heat and UVB bulb, in a dome fitting, secured to the upright on the table. This enables you to replicate the temperatures from their natural habitat. With basking temperatures of around 36°C for most species, we include a digital thermometer for piece of mind to ensure the correct temperature requirements are being met. The lighting is recommended to be on for 12 hours during the day, so we provide a 24 hour timer to allow everything to be switched off at night to allow for a natural night time temperature drop. An interesting habitat can be provided for the young tortoise by adding flattish pebbles, large stones to give different textures, allow for climbing, and they are also useful for helping to keep the claws in trim.
