About this deal

The varieties can be separated 4 main groups: big-leaf, smooth-leaf, panicle and oakleaf varieties. These four groups are all relatively easy to care for and provide a wonderful summer display. You’ll find a break down of these different varieties below. A taller shrub with almost luminous medium sized lacecap flowers with both fertile and sterile flowers of rich blue. 1.5 to 2m (4ft - 6ft).

Although hydrangeas can be planted at any time of year, autumn is the besttime, closely followed by early to mid Spring. The reason is that at thesetimes of year the soil will be naturally moist, a key requirement forhealthy hydrangeas. Two things to note: this effect only lasts as long as the fertiliser is affecting the soil, and this doesn’t work on pure white hydrangea flowers. More information They occur in sedate as well as arresting tones of colours ranging from reddish pink to blue, often with rather differently coloured flowers on the same branch.Droopy leaves are quite a common problem with hydrangeas and the cause may be rooted in any one of multiple reasons. How to fertilize hydrangeas is just as important as what you’re fertilizing hydrangeas with. Fertilizer burn can occur when too much is applied. Scorched looking leaves are the first sign of too much fertilizing. Hydrangeas should be lightly dressed with fast-release fertilizer in March, May, and July. You should take your cutting early in the day when the plant is full of water. Choose a healthy, non-flowering tip and remove a stem of 10 centimetres (4 inches) in length with a clean, sharp knife. Hydrangeas usually need a deep watering about once a week. In very dry weather they may need even more. It is best to give them a thorough watering rather than a light sprinkling every day. Water your plants at the base rather than on the leaves to help prevent too much humidity which can encourage fungus to thrive. Water early in the day to allow any moisture on the leaves to evaporate.

Hydrangeas also benefit from an application of liquid iron every two years. This will keep the leaves nice and green and healthy. This is particularly important for the Asian varieties. The soil mixtureshould be similar to one part of peat free multipurpose to two parts JohnInnes Number 3 compost. The hydrangea should be planted in the new containerto the same depth as it was in the previous container. Garden hydrangeas should not be confused with climbing hydrangeas which are, you guessed it, climbers. What we love about this organic fertilizer is its all-natural ingredients including sulfur, which is used to correct alkaline soils. Sulfur also helps produce the much-needed proteins that plants need, while gypsum helps develop vitamins and enzymes. Knowing how to fertilize hydrangeas is just as important as the product you use to feed them. The amount of fertilizer used depends on the size of the plant as well as its root system. Applying too much fertilizer is much more harmful than under-fertilization. You’ll risk burning the plant, diminishing bloom, or even worse, killing the hydrangea.Keep hydrangeas (esp those in pots) watered through the winter, they still need moisture, and a weak plant is less likely to recover well from frost damage. Amend your soil to achieve the coloration you require for your hydrangea. 5.5 or less for blue flowers, 6.5 or above for pink flowers I always have a large tub of blood, fish and bone in my shed, and if you want to keep things simple by choosing just one or two feeds for most of your plants, I recommend starting with this but as a standalone product, I found it a little weak for my hydrangeas. This will enable you to water it well without water and soil spilling out of the pot. Hydrangeas like plenty of sun, however, they do not like to dry out. For this reason, it’s best to put your container-grown plant in a place that gets morning sun, but a little shade in the hottest part of the day.

Sprinkle on a handful of fish, blood and bone and gently work it in witha trowel. Do not use a nitrogen rich fertiliser, this will only result inexcessive leaf growth which can easily be damaged in cold weather. Water the plant in well and cover the surrounding soil with a mulch. CARING FOR HYDRANGEAS Ideally, you want a balanced fertilizer where all three numbers are the same for example 10-10-10 or a high Phosphorus fertilizer such as 5-10-5. Just avoid a high nitrogen product where the first number is significantly higher than the others. We would recommend a natural and organic spray such as Bug Clear forFruit and Veg Gun or Vitax Plant Guard Pest and Disease Control. Hydrangea arborescens will take whatever the weather throws at it. However on damp soils, or in wet summers, it can become invasive and land grab from other plants. The main symptom you will notice will be small white oval “blobs” on theunderside of leaves and in some cases on the stems. These will most likelyappear in mid June to mid July. The insects crawl out from this waxycovering and migrate to the stems. The white “blobs” will remain for severalweeks although the insects will no longer be under it.

How to use: Apply one handful (35g) of Vitax Hydrangea Food around the base of the plant whilst planting. Through spring apply as a top dressing and lightly dig in or rake over the soil. In dry weather, make sure you water the ground beforehand for the best results. Select vigorous shoots from the current year’s growth and cut off with a sharp knife. Remove the soft tip growth and cut each stem into sections of 15-30 cm (6 -12 inches) with the top cut being at an angle and just above a bud. If a hydrangea runs short of water it will let you know by wilting. However, don’t let it get to this stage because each time they wilt, they loose some oftheir vigour. Hydrangeas are usually fairly resistant to pests and diseases. However occasionally one of the following may give your plant some trouble. Pests
