In some respects, our shortlist’s products aim at different markets, and direct comparisons may be disingenuous. VOC’s are substances which release vapour at room temperatures. VOC’s are added to some paints to aid drying times and they do this by vapourising the liquids in the paint to get to a hardened finish in the shortest time possible. The solvent vapours produced by VOC’s in the paint can be harmful if proper ventilation isn’t available – especially if used indoors. Exposure to high VOC paint should be limited. Whilst you can use a roller for gloss paint, you’ll almost always get the best finish with a paint brush. The result was the yellowing of paint over time, with some gloss paints yellowing in a matter of months or even weeks after application. Not ideal when looking for a long-lasting white finish and a white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow. The best way is to avoid the possibility of yellowing gloss is by choosing a water-based gloss and with the ongoing development of WB paints, new products are coming to market that offers better durability and more hard-wearing capabilities that can often rival those of oil-based solvents.

If your existing paint is in a good condition, your job here is easy. Just lightly sand it with 240 grit sandpaper and then apply a primer and undercoat. Although we’ve linked to tins of varying sizes, it’s important to note that gloss paint often comes in diverse quantities. While Rustins remove the tyranny of choice by only selling their paint in 250ml tins, Dulux customers can choose from 30ml tester pots, five-litre tubs, and everything in between. It’s a water based paint made from a PU Alkyd Emulsion containing a polymer effective at giving water-borne paints high scratch resistance and film toughness.As well as working on metal, this paint can also be applied to wood or worktops, making it a uniquely versatile and flexible option. Pros Traditionalists regard oil-based paint as more durable (and therefore better) but it usually takes longer to dry and has a stronger smell, which takes longer to dissipate. It’s more durable than eggshell and keeps its colour well. It comes in both oil-based or water-based formulas and is the best-of-both-worlds choice. There’s a decent choice of colours (nine, including magnolia and the white we’re testing here), but no finishes are available other than gloss. This paint isn’t marketed as brilliant white, though users seem quite satisfied with its hue.With the new legislation being introduced in 2010 painting manufacturers sought to find a solution to the new limits of solvent regulations in the UK. This prompted manufacturers to replace it with an increase of drying oil components to aid in the finish of gloss paint. Gloss paint is one of our favourites to use and gives you a nice, shiny finish you wouldn’t get with other types of paint. But let’s not get too bogged down with the science of paint. All I want to do in this blog, is talk about what I think are the three best white gloss products on the market. I can only go off my personal experience, so I apologise if your favourite isn’t on the list. However, I am a massive product geek, so I have tried a large proportion of the gloss paints that are available. There’s no requirement for an undercoat, while the coverage of 16 metres per litre means the tin we’re testing could cover 40 square metres in one go. There are no tester pots available; the smallest tub offered is 750ml, while the largest (2.5 litres) is half the size of Dulux’s biggest offering. If you’re not an experienced painter and are looking for something that’s not going to leave you with brush marks, this is the paint for you! Gloss paint isn’t very good at hiding imperfections so the secret to get a nice smooth finish with gloss paint is to firstly prepare the surface beforehand. You can do this by sanding down any imperfections which takes us to the next step.Secondly, you can use one or two coats of a good primer which will help to smooth over the surface before you’re ready to apply the gloss. If working with wood in particular, we tend to sand down the surface again before applying the second coat of primer. We’ve used this paint in the past and found it’s a particularly good choice when we’re painting in commercial environments due to its speedy dry time. We always get a high quality finish from it and would definitely recommend it. This paint’s most significant attribute is its affordability. I.e. 0.75 litres of paint costs half as much as Dulux and a third as much as Rustins. If you’re not buying in bulk, that’s a compelling advantage. In 2010 came the introduction of the European Union’s Industrial Emissions Directive (IED – Directive 2010/75/EU) which puts emission limits on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) contents within industrial activities. This directive is then enacted in the UK by the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 SI 675. The result is a restriction of VOC contents within the paint industry. Don’t forget to put down a dust sheet to protect the areas you don’t want to get paint on. And always wear a mask when sanding otherwise you’ll end up with a mouthful of dust!
