Nose: A very nice subtle smokiness, with slight hints of toffee, and honey, with a glimmer of green apple. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. It’s not quite as good as the old 17 yo it replaced, but it is a worthy addition to the line. It has a warm waxy character that keeps drawing me in and I find myself reaching for the Old Pulteney 15 and wanting the experience of drinking it. This is the bare minimum of what all Old Pulteney should be. Has an ok balance with nothing too distracting happening. A medium body and a smooth uneventful texture. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. Fruity, malty, and spicy. The spice is cinnamon heavy with bits of nutmeg sitting in there too. Vanilla and a light bit of dark sweets fill the gaps.

Palate: Very much a nice light taste of smoky honey and almost fruity touch. Slightly brininess, that you would expect from something exposed to the salty sea air. The fundamental nature of maturing whisky – deliberately but unhurriedly over the years – reinforces a near monolithic link to the past. This can be positively appreciated by exploring processes and practices from decades past, or from experiencing bottlings now defunct that capture a particular moment. Time doesn’t stand still, and nor does whisky. But, all too often I’m seeing the past manifest itself in a binary belief that things were always better before – a view that in some instances may well be true, but one which will only lead to perpetual disappointment – and higher secondary market prices for the things which once were.
