A sequel series done right, there is an emphasis on new characters and some references to old characters. This series sets up the plot for the interaction with Earth, and looking at why the Great Guilds formed in the first place. From a character point of view its about living under someones shadow and being constantly compared to someone. In the end this story is about making your own path. I would have expected a far greater difference in language between the people of Urth and Demeter, but that would have made the book about that instead. The linguistic differences do come up and provide some of the comic relief. There are two main branches, magic or engineering, pretty vanilla stuff. I found the foresight thing to be a bit of a cop-out so that the story can keep going, and to be honest there was nothing surprising in the whole tale.
