About this deal

Fortunately, there are ways you can help mitigate these dangers and keep your beloved bestie safe when riding around town. In fact, dogs not only raise your risk of having an accident, they can make accidents more dangerous too. So, you have to keep safety in mind!

There are a few options here – either fastening your harness to a separate seatbelt clip which clips in, looping your seatbelt through the harness or clipping the harness to the fastened car seatbelt. Separate dog seatbelt Because it’s designed with comfort in mind, the Kurgo Tru-fit no pull dog harness can also be used as a no-pull walking harness. There’s a halt ring on the front chest plate. If your pup tries to pull, it will just turn him around effectively training him that pulling will get him nowhere!

RAC Medium Dog Car Harness

Instead, you want a harness that has been tested by a third-party group, and has passed the test – hopefully with flying colors. The survey also revealed that nearly half of the British dog-owning, driving public (which account for over 2.5 million people), are unaware that they are breaking the law and not abiding by the highway code when not suitably restraining their dog whilst driving. Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases. By far the most popular crashed tested dog car harness is by the well-known Kurgo brand. It’s available in a choice of three different styles and six sizes to best suit the requirements of your dog.

One manufacturer had a university conduct the tests, and we’d generally consider it a safe option. The other only utilized their own testing protocol, so we’re a little less confident about that one. However, budget-limited owners may not have many other options, so we’ve included it anyway. Look for harnesses that have dual functionality. Some of the best car harnesses are easy to take out of the car, allowing them to be used as a normal harness. This makes it much easier to get your dog strapped in, especially if you must let her hop in and out several times over the course of a single trip.

Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Harness

Owners often love having a canine co-pilot too, so you’ll see plenty of pooches riding down the street on any given day. Tapping into our depth of harness design knowledge, familiarity with strength-rated hardware, and our eagerness to explore new paths, our Design & Development team set out to design a dog harness specifically for vehicle use. And, in 2015, we launched the Load Up™ Harness. Strong, secure, and ergonomic – designed from a dog's perspective and focused on the dog’s comfort over long road trips with their humans. Also, remember that a car harness won’t protect your seats. If you’re worried about upholstery or leather getting scratched, consider getting a car seat cover too.

The downside of this criteria is that it greatly reduces the number of available options! The vast majority of harnesses have not passed a crash test, even if they are marketed for use in cars. One thing to keep in mind is that acar harness isn’t necessarily the best harness for walking. Car restraints need to be tough and durable to withstand high forces, but this can make them heavy and more difficult to put on. Either use a fabric tape measure or if you don’t have one, a piece of string works. If you have a ‘wriggler’ then get some help, fit their collar first to hold onto and if you're still struggling use some dog treats. A simple solution is to have a separate harness for travel and walking. There are some crash-tested harnesses that can be used for both though.

Which CarSafe Harness is right for me?

While there are no rules surrounding how they are secured – seatbelt clips, harnesses, car seats and carriers are all suggested – many people like to keep their dog in the car and not the boot. In which case, a car harness is ideal as it is specifically designed to be used in a vehicle. But here at Doggy Dream Team we don’t like the idea of ‘basic’ road safety. We want our fur-family members to be as safe as our kids, which is why we looked into the best travel harnesses for medium-sized dogs. However, the alternative is a harness which allows you to use the permanently fitted seatbelt passed through a loop on the harness. Some people prefer this, especially for stronger dogs, as it gives them less leeway and opportunity to bounce.

When it comes to playing ball with your pooch, size matters – a small dog will not enjoy playing with a large ball it cannot get its teeth around, while a large dog could easily choke on a ball that is too small. When looking for a car-safe harness, my criteria are that it mustbe both crash-tested and adjustable. While comfort is also important, it comes secondary to the safety of the harness. Although some harnesses are sold as a set along with the seatbelt attachment, others may sell the attachment separately. Fortunately, the Center for Pet Safety (CPS) conducts exactly these types of tests and publishes their testing protocols and results so that pet owners can make informed choices. These types of distractions can occur if your dog simply moves around while the car is in motion, or if you pet her or give her a treat. And because taking your eyes off the road for as little as two seconds doubles your risk for having an accident, this is a serious problem, which must be avoided as much as is possible. The only main downside of this harness is the fact that it’s only available in a single style but they do offer a choice of three sizes that are all adjustable for maximum comfort.
