About this deal

The Air Strait has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a luxury Dyson flat iron-style tool: a bright LED screen, pre-set temperatures for wet and dry styling, and zero wait time for the tool to heat up. One of the highlights for us was noticing the pre-set wet styling temperatures (175 degrees, 230 degrees, and 285 degrees) were significantly lower than the temps for dry styling (250 degrees, 285 degrees, and Boost — which goes up to 320 degrees and is recommended only for touch-ups). We appreciated the preemptive defense against heat damage, and the settings were easy to adjust. For extra ionic technology it's always best to use a tourmaline straightener. I use the Karmin G3 because it has ceramic and tourmaline so it's extra safe and incredibly effective. What We Love: The hair straightener glides through hair seamlessly and its silicone grip and swivel cord make it easy to maneuver and achieve any style. You might think steam would be the enemy of straight hair, but it actually moisturizes it while the heat flattens it into shape. According to L’Oreal, this allows the Steampod to gently dry the outer shaft without drying the core. When you go outside, especially in humid conditions, the hair then doesn’t absorb any of the extra moisture and remains frizz-free. Not all hair needs to be fried between hot plates to straighten it. Some people can get soft, bouncy blowouts using a blow-dry brush rather than the old dryer and round brush combo. For coarser hair like mine, I recommend the RevAir below.

TYMO RING & TYMO RING PINK - the most popular and classic TYMO electric brush for hair that has won 2,000,000+ customers worldwide. Wow, this sounds like a good idea! I was just trying to figure out how I could keep straightening my hair without damaging it more. I've been making it straight for years now and it's getting really dry. I use moisturizing conditioners and everything -- but I guess it just isn't enough to combat the heat of the hot iron. For the most part, we were able to run it through our hair without tangling in our strands, though we did notice minimal shedding when we used it on fine hair. However, across hair types 1C to 4B, the ceramic tourmaline plate evenly distributed heat to prevent a fried, crunchy look.Curls are beautiful, but taking care of and styling them can be a long, frustrating, and often expensive task. Whether you have tight coils, waves, or Shirley Temple spirals, sometimes you just want to smooth them out and not be bothered for a few days. Having a good tool, be it a flat iron or a blow-dry brush, makes that process easier. London-based hairstylist Hollie Rose Clarke says ions in hair tools keep the cuticle layer of your hair smooth, so you'll get a shinier, frizz-free result. “Think of a strand of your hair as being the size of my arm, covered in fish scales (the cuticles)," she says. "When the hair is damaged, they open slightly, resulting in dry, frizzy, and weak hair. When the hair is healthy they are closed, resulting in your hair feeling smoother and stronger.” It’s a daunting thought to consider applying more heat to already brittle, damaged hair, but the L’Oreal steam function on the Flair Iron & Styler straightened our strands just as efficiently as traditional high heat options. Although the practice isn’t a totally new concept, styling tools use steam to boost moisture, condition hair, and cleanse scalps. When we wanted to exert the least amount of effort and see the highest payoff, the ion Magnesium Flat Iron gave us the best results. At an affordable price point, its design included everything we wanted from a hassle-free hot tool: It automatically turned off after 45 minutes, beeped when it reached our desired temperature, and thoughtful placement of the heat setting buttons, which are placed on the inside of the tool to avoid accidentally bumping the wrong one while we used it.

Cleaning your flat at least once a week keeps it in top-notch condition. Without a regular wipe down, build-up from heat protectants and other styling products can impact the amount of heat that is transferred from the plates to your hair, meaning that even with a high temperature, you’ll need to do more passes to get the same result. If you can look past its slightly odd shape, the Revlon Double Straight’s four-plate design makes a lot of sense. As you pass the Double Straight over your hair, the first two plates straighten, while the second two ‘reinforce’ the style. This effectively allows you to make two passes in one, which reduces both the time it takes to complete the style and the risk of heat damage. I found this to be largely true, although to get the full effect you need to pass it over your hair slightly slower than you would do normally, which cuts into the time-saving benefits a little. This technique isn’t totally intuitive — occasionally the dual plates creased our hair when we left it on a strand for too long.

Pros and cons of the ceramic hair straightener

News flash: while flat irons are a great option for sleek, smooth strands, they are not the the only option out there. H air straightening brushes work as a flat iron and a brush in one to help streamline the smoothing process, detangling as they style. These tools are essentially hot hair brushes, so you can effectively brush and detangle your hair while you straighten it for frizz-free, shiny hair in a single step. Ionic straighteners might actually help restore your hair, if you take vitamin D and lots of fish oil -- as your hair grows, it will be healthier. The ionic straightener is about the only thing you can do other than moisturizers to fix the hair you already have.

If you want a more natural look, Kee suggests allowing the curls to cool before combing through with your fingers and giving your hair a good tousle.Abra McField, founder of Abra Kadabra Hair and Healing, says hair is usually positively charged due to its water content, and the negative ions these flat irons generate can help dissipate that water. “You get controlled application of the heat you are applying, and you are able to use only as much heat as you need to smooth and straighten your hair, which can prevent damage.” We loved that the interior of the clamp had comb-like teeth to mimic the effect of a hot brush. This feature allowed us to easily straighten and untangle our hair without catching strands. Although this design feature wasn’t conducive for curling hair — at most we saw a soft wave — we were so pleased with its straightening ability and affordability that we didn’t give it much more thought. With our hair woes solved, our one wish is an automatic shut off, but given all of its other great features we can let this con slide.
