About this deal

They used it during the Infiltration of the British Ministry of Magic with Harry underneath it most of the time. [28]

It could be possible that Harry used the Cloak in his Auror years, until he decided to pass it on to James. Harry was hidden underneath the Cloak after the trio escaped the Wedding of William Weasley and Fleur Delacour and during the Luchino Caffe Duel on the same night. [27]After Luna distracted everyone in the aftermath of the battle, Harry used the Cloak to find Ron and Hermione and tell them everything that had happened. [33] Lent Sturgis Podmore his best Invisibility Cloak in 1995 to assist in guarding the Prophecy in the Department of Mysteries. He mentioned that Podmore had not had the manners to return it in a timely fashion and forced Moody to use his second best cloak. [5] This was because Podmore had been placed under the Imperius Curse by Death Eaters. [6]

Stephens, Meic, ed. (1998). The New Companion to the Literature of Wales. Cardiff: University of Wales Press. ISBN 978-0-7083-1383-1. The Elder Wand, ' he said, and he drew a straight vertical line on the parchment. 'The Resurrection Stone, ' he said, and he added a circle on top of the line. 'The Cloak of Invisibility, ' he finished, enclosing both line and circle in a triangle, to make the symbol that so intrigued Hermione. 'Together, ' he said, 'the Deathly Hallows. '" — Xenophilius Lovegood [src] These materials are, by nature, highly dispersive, hence light passing around a "cloaked" object would be strongly refracted ( prisms are not invisible). According to the legend of the Tale of the Three Brothers, it is said that when a trio of brothers went on a journey, Death appeared in front of them and gave them each a gift. The first two brothers got the Elder Wand and the Resurrection Stone according to their wishes, and the youngest brother, got the Cloak of Invisibility that Death fashioned out of his own Invisibility Cloak. It is said that this legend refers to the Peverell brothers who lived around the 13th century. The youngest brother is said to be Ignotus Peverell who lived in Godric’s Hollow and was buried in a graveyard there.Ten years later, Dumbledore gave Harry Potter the Cloak of Invisibility as a Christmas present anonymously and told him to " use it well". [4] This would be one piece of advice that Harry would use quite well over his school life and beyond, as the Cloak of Invisibility aided Harry on countless trips and missions, including his hunt for Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. It was not until 1998, that Harry learned the true nature of his own Invisibility Cloak and its true identity as the Cloak of Invisibility, as spoken of in the legend of the Deathly Hallows. [7] As Ignotus's last remaining descendant, the Cloak was rightfully Harry's and was kept by him after Lord Voldemort's defeat. Harry resolved to pass it on to his children one day, just as his ancestors had done. However, cloaking a human-sized object at visible wavelengths appears to have low probability. [15] Indeed, there appears to be a fundamental problem with these devices as "invisibility cloaks": [16] It's not yet clear that you're going to get the invisibility that everyone thinks about with Star Trek cloaking device or the Harry Potter's cloak. To make an object literally vanish before a person's eyes, a cloak would have to simultaneously interact with all of the wavelengths, or colors, that make up light.

When Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley discuss the Hallows at Xenophilius Lovegood's house, they each choose a different Hallow that they'd rather have: Harry chooses the Resurrection Stone, Hermione chooses the Cloak of Invisibility, and Ron chooses the Elder Wand. This resembles the Three Brothers themselves, as Hermione and Ignotus both were wiser than those around them, Harry and Cadmus both were pained by deaths in their past, and Ron and Antioch both had others in their life they wanted to surpass. Now let's put all of these components together to see how the invisibility cloak appears to make a person transparent. This diagram shows the typical arrangement of all the various devices and pieces of equipment. Bland, Eric. "Invisibility Cloak Closer Than Ever to Reality." Discovery News. Jan. 15, 2009. (Oct. 13, 2009)http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/01/15/invisibility-cloak.html In Hagrid’s cabin, Harry and Ron heard the cold, sinister voice of one Lucius Malfoy. They discovered in that moment that the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, was unjustly taking Hagrid to Azkaban, and that Dumbledore had been removed from his position as Headmaster. Trapped by the Body-Bind curse and hidden from view, Harry could only listen as Malfoy, Snape and the Death Eaters confronted Dumbledore.

On the Hogwarts Express

The cloak itself, much like other magical items in the Harry Potter universe, may have been based on the Mantle of Arthur from Arthurian legends. The mantle, or Ilen, was able to hide anyone underneath it by rendering them invisible, though able to see out of it. Next, an observer (let's call him Professor Snape) stands before Harry at a specific location. At that location, instead of seeing Harry wearing a hooded raincoat, Snape sees right through the cloak, making Harry appear to be invisible.
