About this deal

As with all durable matt emulsion products, having the correct brush and roller for the job will make all the different. You need a medium pile roller for Crown Clean Extreme, as it will deposit the paint smoothly. A soft emulsion brush is also preferable, simply because this paint flows well and you’ll cut a better line with a soft brush. Cleaning : A small residue of colour may be wiped away when the painted surface is first cleaned. This is entirely normal and in no way compromises the integrity or finished appearance of the paint film. Marks on the painted surface can be wiped away with a damp cloth.

Crown Trade vinyl matt represents great value for money, which echoes Crown Trade as a whole. You will get a good finish with this paint and the price is very attractive. However, you will need to be careful not to let it drag on application, and your finished walls can scuff easily. You wouldn’t use Crown Trade vinyl matt in rooms with high traffic, or in homes with pets and small children. So, we know Crown Trade is cheaper than Dulux and Johnstone’s Covaplus, you’d think that means it’s of lower quality, right? Well, it goes on nice and easily, leaves a nice flat finish and the opacity is spot on. Two coats are easily enough to cover bare plaster and leave a solid finish. So, no complaints so far. I think every manufacturer is doing a version of a class 1 scrubbable matt nowadays. Not all though do have a Matt finish as advertised. Some leave a mark when wiped too. Some are cheaper than others too but it’s good to have choices. Crown clean extreme is a good paint and I’d happily recommend it to my clients. Taking 3rd place as voted for by 15% of the professional painters and decorators we surveyed is Dulux’s consistently reliable Diamond Matt. This isn’t all too surprising to us. Dulux’s Diamond matt has a good reputation among tradesmen as a reliable, durable and stain-resistant emulsion. Over the last few years, I’ve noticed more and more professional painters embracing Johnstone’s new products with the Aqua Guard (satinwood) being another favourite of tradesmen. So what’s all the fuss about? Not only are they affordable and scrubbable, I find them a pleasure to use, the consistency is great, and Crown include really helpful information on the tins such as what to use as a mist-coat on fresh plaster, what tips and pressure to use if you’re spraying… I really, really have to struggle to find something I dislike about this range of products. It is probably the best durable emulsion range on the UK market. Optiva 5 was clearly a big favourite amongst many decorators but it seems their recent batch isn’t up to standard. It’s very possible that they’ll tweak the formula in the coming weeks, however. Taking the 4th and 5th spots are Tikkurila 5 and Tikkurila 3 with the professionals seemingly at loggerheads as to which one is the best washable matt paint. Again, I’m a huge fan of this product. Like the scrubbable matt, most stains just wipe off, but if you do need to scrub it, go for it; although they don’t make a big feature of it on the front of the tin, the Clean Extreme Eggshell has also been independently tested to class 1 scrubbability (I don’t think that scrubbability is in the dictionary, but you know what I mean!). Recommended usage: Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is well-suited for high-traffic, indoor areas such as hallways and interior walls.

So, this product has all the great benefits of Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt, PLUS it gives defence against bacteria such as E-Coli and MRSA, thanks to Crown’s SteriTouch technology. This has something to do with Silver Ions, and I was seriously the worst kid in the class at chemistry at school, so please don’t ask me to explain how it works. But if you’re working in a hospital and need a scrubbable matt finish, this is the paint for you! Whilst the Optiva 5 is causing some headaches for Tikkurila, the same can’t be said about the Optiva 3. As of June 2021, it’s a big favourite amongst decorators due to the ceramic technology within the paint which makes it easy to wash. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt - offers a finish that is 100% more stain resistant compared to conventional Crown Trade matt vinyl emulsion . It has superior cleaning capabilities which do not compromise the integrity or finished appearance of the paint film. I tend to use class 1 matt emulsion in high traffic area’s and never had a problem with it. For this review I painted a hall, stairs and landing that I had previously stripped of wallpaper, and primed the plaster with two coats of Zinsser Gardz. Crown Trade's Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt provides a true matt finish with durability and longevity to allow repetitive cleaning. ISO 11998 is an industry standard test method used to determine the wet scrub resistance of a dry paint film. Most marks will scrub away with water alone. For more extensive stains use a mild detergent solution.

I’m an Armstead man through and through and whilst the Armstead Durable is on the thin side which can affect the opacity, it goes on very nicely and is overall superb stuff. 2 or 3 coats usually covers dirty walls. Macpherson’s Acrylic Matt (Joe Hessey)

Drying Time: Under normal drying conditions, touch dry in 1-2 hours and re-coatable after 4 hours. Allow for adequate ventilation during the drying period. Perhaps the best feature fo the Diamond Matt (apart from it being washable of course) is the smooth finish you can achieve. Due to the consistency, it’s very rare that you’d get any brush or roller marks, especially if you’re using decent equipment. Available online, you can apply Clean Extreme via brush and roller, or airless sprayer. Touch dry in 1 – 2 hours, the recoat time is more like 3 – 4 hours, but this depends heavily on conditions. Bare plaster should be primed using a heavily diluted coat of Clean Extreme Matt to seal the surface, however a lot of decorators I know still use contract matt to prime bare plaster. For all you mathematicians out there, you’ve probably realised that the percentage of votes doesn’t add up to 100. Of course, that’s because we’ve only included the top 5 paints that were voted for. There are some others that garnered a few votes which we’ve listed below along with some quotes from the professionals who chose them as their favourite. Armstead Durable (Mike Lucas)

2.5 Litre Tinted Colour

The viscosity is just right too, so no need to water the paint down. I did a big hall, stairs and landing, using only 5L of Crown Clean Extreme to double coat the walls, so one tin goes a long way. Benefits : New and aged stains can be easily cleaned away, returning walls to an ‘as new’ condition – reducing the need for costly redecoration. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable is a true flat matt with 10,000 scrubs durability. It has been independently tested to ISO 11998 Class 1 scrub rating for guaranteed results in high-traffic areas. Whilst we’ve used the paint a couple of times, we thought we’d reach out to self-employed professional decorator Chris Marsh for his opinion:

With 35% of the vote share from the 136 participants in our poll, Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt is a clear winner, getting almost twice as many votes as 2nd place. To be honest, this doesn’t totally surprise me. So why do professional painters opt for a trade paint like Crown Clean Extreme over ‘washable’ retail paints? Well, you will reduce overall maintenance costs in labour and material due to the longevity and prolonged aesthetics of the paint over a longer period. So whilst the initial cost of a paint like Crown Clean Extreme might seem high, overall it will provide you with more value over the long run. Crown Trade Clean Extreme is a great range of products at a price that should really make it everyone’s first choice for environments that need a stain-resistant, scrubbable paint, whether it’s high traffic hallways, hospitals or bathrooms occupied by teenagers! It should go without saying but the clue is in the question. Washable matt is (obviously) washable which means it will typically be easier to clean than regular matt paints. But that’s not the only advantage it enjoys – washable matt paint tends to be better at resisting stains and grease too so that you don’t have to deal with them in the first place. Due to its expert technical knowledge of the technologies and materials available across the industry, Promain has a reputation for outstanding service among its trade and retail customers. In the past, Crown Stain Resistant Clean Extreme Matt has been poor opacity with white. However, Crown identified the problem and improved the formula to compensate. This covered a base white in two coats of Clean Extreme, which is impressive for a durable matt. The paint flowed well and didn’t pull, but I always cut it in and go around with a 4 inch paint roller. Coming in second place is the Crown Clean Extreme scrubbable matt which is estimated to withstand up to 10,000 scrubs. In terms of durability, it doesn’t get much better than that. Good scrubbable paint. Matt finish Available in almost any colour. The finish is lovely and it is a joy to use.
