About this deal

The total quantity of selenium in the human body is between 3 mg and 20 mg. In human, selenium is excreted in feces, urine or lung, depending on the administered dosage. Selenium is primarily renally excreted in the form of trimethylselenonium ion. The excretion depends on the selenium status. Hercberg S, Kesse-Guyot E, Druesne-Pecollo N, Touvier M, Favier A, Latino-Martel P, et al. Incidence of cancers, ischemic cardiovascular diseases and mortality during 5-year follow-up after stopping antioxidant vitamins and minerals supplements: a postintervention follow-up in the SU.VI.MAX Study. Int J Cancer 2010;127:1875-81. [ PubMed abstract]

In the first trial (40 participants over six months), there was no significant difference between those who were given selenium or placebo in all aspects of disease severity, including pain, morning stiffness and number of swollen joints. This has been attributed to selenium’s ability to reduce DNA damage and oxidative stress, boost your immune system, and destroy cancer cells ( 8). Most seafood contains high levels of selenium. In a 3-ounce serving, yellowfin tuna and white fish like halibut have about 92 micrograms of the mineral, while tinned sardines contain 45 micrograms for the same portion. Selenium levels are significantly lower in patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis than in healthy individuals. Hemodialysis removes some selenium from the blood [ 24]. In addition, hemodialysis patients are at risk of low dietary selenium intakes due to anorexia resulting from uremia and dietary restrictions. Although selenium supplementation increases blood levels in hemodialysis patients, more evidence is needed to determine whether supplements have beneficial clinical effects in these individuals. For example, one study showed that the selenium concentration in Brazil nuts varied widely by region. While a single Brazil nut from one region provided up to 288% of the recommended intake, others provided only 11% ( 35). The limited clinical trial evidence to date does not support the use of selenium supplements for preventing heart disease, particularly in healthy people who already obtain sufficient selenium from food. Additional clinical trials are needed to better understand the contributions of selenium from food and dietary supplements to cardiovascular health. Cognitive decline

Asthma has been associated with increased levels of oxidative stress and inflammation in the body ( 29). Allen NE, Appleby PN, Roddam AW, Tjonneland A, Johnsen NF, Overvad K, et al. Plasma selenium concentration and prostate cancer risk: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Am J Clin Nutr 2008;88:1567-75. [ PubMed abstract]One review concluded that taking selenium supplements daily for three months resulted in lower thyroid antibodies. It also led to improvements in mood and general well-being in those with Hashimoto’s disease ( 24). On the other hand, deficiency has been shown to harm immune cell function and may lead to a slower immune response ( 25). Brinkman M, Reulen RC, Kellen E, Buntinx F, Zeegers MP. Are men with low selenium levels at increased risk of prostate cancer? Eur J Cancer 2006;42:2463-71. [ PubMed abstract] The requirementof seleniumin the endocrine system is defined by its role in making active thyroid hormone. The mineral interacts with iodothyronine deiodinase, an enzyme that transforms inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into active thyroid hormone (T3). [1] Loef M, Schrauzer GN, Walach H. Many whole grains and dairy products, including milk and yogurt, are good sources of selenium. Some ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are fortified with selenium, and some fruits and vegetables contain selenium.Studies have also associated deficiency with an increased risk of death and disease progression in people with HIV, while supplements have been shown to lead to fewer hospitalizations and an improvement in symptoms for these patients ( 26). Selenium is important for the proper functioning of your thyroid gland. In fact, thyroid tissue contains a higher amount of selenium than any other organ in the human body ( 21). While it is best known for its antioxidant properties, selenium is therefore associated with diseases of the heart and blood vessels like stroke and hardening of the arteries. It is also related to preventing various forms of cancer including prostate, stomach, lung and skin cancers thanks to its ability to increase antioxidant activity.
