About this deal

When you want to make lights look especially twinkly in a scene, use a starburst filter. They come with 2, 4, 6 or 8–point star effects. I never leave my home without a polarizing filter. When photographing landscapes, I often use a polarizing filter to spice up the colors, darken the sky and reduce haze. Polarizing filters are a must when photographing waterfalls or other wet scenery with vegetation. Before we discuss the categories of filters, it’s important for us to understand why a photographer would choose to use filters in the first place. Some photographers believe that a scene should be shot without being altered in any way. Other photographers feel there are valid reasons for using filters. Once you learn how to use photography filters properly, it can lead you to find more clients and gigs. That’s because it can help you create

Let’s go through the different types of filters that are available today. Overview of Types of Lens Filters There is a minimum and a maximum effect of polarization, depending on the filter alignment. You should rotate the filter every time you compose for best results. Take a look at this example of minimum and maximum effect of polarization: Another example is shooting with daylight film in the early morning shade. This situation has a higher color temperature than daylight, so the film would record the scene with a bluish tint to it. The photo below on the left is a waterfall shot in heavy shade.Hard-edge GND filters are primarily used in high contrast situations, where the sky is much brighter than the foreground and the horizon is flat. These filters are always rectangular (giving the ability to move them in all directions) and are typically used with filter holders. The reverse GND is a specialized filter used by landscape photographers when shooting against the sun while it is setting close to the horizon. While a regular GND filter gradually transitions from dark to clear towards the center, a reverse GND filter transitions from dark to less dark from the center to the edge. The FL-D lens filter works by absorbing specific wavelengths of light that are responsible for the unwanted color shifts, effectively reducing the greenish-blue tint in your images. By doing so, it helps to correct the color temperature and white balance, ensuring that your photos appear more true-to-life and vibrant.

Filters are not just for cameras but are manufactured alongside a range of other smartphone camera accessories. You can buy filter mounts that attach to your phone and allow you to attach ND filters, diffusion filters or polarizing filters. Get filtering! There are two types of fluorescent filters available to photographers. The FLD filter is designed for daylight film. The FLB filter is produced for tungsten film. While both absorb light, it has been my experience that an extra half-stop of exposure is required beyond what the camera suggests.

Ultraviolet (UV) and skylight filters

One of the major disappointments while shooting cityscapes is that the color in the sky is not registered in your camera as accurately as it appears to your eyes, right? Even if you are able to match the colors in your photo, you might still find the sky to be dull or hazy. What does it do? It lets less light in, so you can do longer exposure shots during the day. If you have taken a landscape shot before, you know that your sky is either too bright or your foreground too dark - because you’re choosing between sky and foreground on what will be properly exposed.

With the sun in front of or behind you, the effect of polarization will be minimal or even nil. When Not to Use a CPL Filter When There’s Not Enough Light Special effects filters can produce some cool effects, but since most effects can be easily produced in Photoshop, these filters pretty much lost their popularity. Digital photographers rarely carry these filters and I personally do not use them either. The star filter can be easily created in Photoshop through a couple of steps using the “Motion Blur” filter, softening glow can also be easily done through a couple of steps with the “Gaussian Blur” filter and most other filters can also be done in Photoshop. The only filter that cannot be reproduced in Photoshop is a bokeh filter because the highlights cannot be easily changed through post-processing techniques. Another reason for using a filter is to allow the camera and your eye to see the scene in the same manner. For example, if you photograph a friend sitting indoors in a chair next to a table lamp, your eye will see the colors as true-to-life.When shooting in direct sunlight, you’ll often find that your images come out harsh and feel overexposed. Think of it as being in the sun with no sunglasses on, it’s hard to see.
