About this deal

When underlying constipation isn’t diagnosed or treated properly, poo stays in the bowel and rectum longer than it should. Ofsted’s most recent annual report referenced the amount of children starting school unable to use the toilet properly as a big concern.

Teaching your child how to use a potty and feel comfortable around wee and poo gives them a gentle journey towards being independent from nappies. It also helps avoid many common potty training problems in the future. If you do not make a fuss when they have an accident, they will not feel anxious and worried, and are more likely to be successful the next time. Put them in clothes that are easy to change and avoid tights and clothes with zips or lots of buttons.

Stay calm and reassuring, so that your child does not see going to the toilet as a stressful situation – you want your child to see pooing as a normal part of life, not something to be ashamed of. Potty training is usually fastest if your child is at the last stage before you start the training. If you start earlier, be prepared for a lot of accidents as your child learns. Try not to worry. Remind yourself that sooner or later, your child will want to be dry for their own sake. If they start to see potty training as a battle with you, it'll be much harder. Learning to sleep without a nappy on at naptime and use the potty when they wake up, will help prepare your child for being dry at night.

More children are being toilet trained later, according to the results of a new survey of early years staff by ERIC and National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA). For more information about treating soiling, see our advice for children with constipation. It explains how laxative treatment and a toilet routine can help a child who is soiling. Once you've helped to grow your child's body awareness and they begin to develop confidence in what they've learnt, you can then start to build in and give opportunities to practice some more advanced skills. These include: Single-use nappies are one of the most common products found in landfills, since the average plastic consumption of single-use nappies per child is equivalent to throwing away 17 plastic bags a day, or more than 6,000 per year, according to government figures.

Accidents are common during the first few months. Use a waterproof sheet or similar underneath your child, to protect their sleep area. Your child will need to be physically ready to control their bladder and bowels at the same time as wanting to be clean and dry. They will also need to be able to understand basic instructions about using the potty or toilet. At this age, you will be taking her outside about 12 times a day. Toys are notorious for taking a little longer to housebreak. It might take more than 6-9 months to do. You never give up, and you don’t give her freedom until she can hold it for at least 4 hours, or you will have to start over again. If your child is pooing their pants (soiling) because they're constipated, a GP can prescribe laxatives to clear out the hard poo and get your child pooing regularly and comfortably again. Your child will need to be physically ready to control their bladder and bowels for potty training. Them wanting to be clean and dry is a must for achieving potty training success. You should not correct a dog who has an accident. It is always the owner’s fault, not the dog’s. Correcting will get you nowhere, she won’t know what it’s for and she might become fearful of you. If your pup has been willing to void in her crate the crate is probably too big and probably hasn't been well enough cleaned. They should always progress not revert.

It’ll happen, your child will have a potty training accident at some point. When it happens, stay calm, reassure them that these things can happen, and help get them clean and dry. Staying calm means your little one is less likely to worry next time they try to use the potty (Institute of Health Visitors, 2014). Reusable cloth potty training pants are handy if you are travelling or when your child is at nursery. These are like underwear but with an absorbent layer to help soak up accidents which can be washed and used again. If you'd like advice about taking the stress out of going to the toilet for your child, speak to a health visitor. It begins with preparation to use the potty, next is practising potty skills before eventually stopping using nappiesas your child gains confidence.Focus on getting your child potty trained during the day before you start leaving their nappy off at night.
