Universally, the complaint was that it didn’t advance the overall “plot” of the books, ie. the war between Bayaz and Khalul. I guess after the all-out thermonuclear inferno of Last Argument, the proxy-war between them in BSC seems tame, especially as Monza’s quest isn’t even revealed as part of that overarching struggle until right at the end.

I agree that Monza isn’t necessarily very likable, but she is real and relatable to me. Convincing as you say. She’s one of my favourite fantasy characters, and my favourite of yours.

While those books each have ties to the original trilogy, they stand well enough on their own. Any would make make for a good entryway into The First Lawuniverse. I FEEL LIKE HE COULD HAVE ACTUALLY DONE SOMETHING RLY INTERESTING WITH HIS PERSONAL TAKE ON DECONSTRUCTING FANTASY TROPES IN FIRST LAW, ESPECIALLY IF HE PLAYED IT OUT, BUT IT WAS JUST SO EARLY AND HE WENT WAY OVERBOARD. LIKE, OVERALL I THINK ACTUALLY ASKING "WHAT IF GANDALF WAS AS EVIL AS SAURON? WHAT THEN?" IS A FAIRLY INTERESTING QUESTION, BUT HE WAS JUST WAY TOO HAM-HANDED WITH THE FIRST PART AND MADE BAYAZ AND KHALUL JUST TOO STRONG, BUT ALSO TOO UNSUBTLE. I THINK HE COULD HONESTLY SPEND LIKE 14 BOOKS PLAYING OUT THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THAT QUESTION AND STILL MAKE IT INTERESTING, BUT NOT WITH BAYAZ SO MUCH IN THE FOREGROUND, AND NOT WITH 6 OF THOSE 14 BEING THE FIRST TRILOGY. WE GET ALMOST ALL OF THE BASIC WIZARD POLITICS AND CONFLICTS AND MANIPULATION OF THE WORLD BY BASICALLY BOOK 2, WHICH IS JUST SO DUMB IN RETROSPECT. LIKE, I THINK YOU COULD KEEP THE WORLD FRESH, BUT NOT IF YOU ACTUALLY FOUND OUT "OH YEAH THE MENTOR IS AN EVIL GUY!!!" THAT EARLY ON. The worlds are usually unforgiving, and the characters often deeply flawed, antiheroes, really, which allows the authors to create some wonderful story and character arcs in their books. Often, in this genre, you’re not sure whether good or even will prevail, and the villain is never someone you can easily forget. Along with Joe Abercrombie, who is called the Lord of Grimdark, another great exampled of a grimdark fantasy author is G.R.R. Martin. Joe Abercrombie. Praise for the Joe Abercrombie Books I’ve long said that Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series was ripe for film or television adaptation, and it looks like Hollywood finally agrees with me! The author’s standalone book in the First Law world, Best Served Cold, is getting an adaptation and not only has some A-list talent attached, but also sees Abercrombie penning the script.
