About this deal

The 1990s had largely been kind to Paul Weller, with deference paid by the younger generation to the ‘elder statesman’ (in his 30s for most of the decade) alongside a trio of well-received albums. That was the primary draw behind Days of Speed, Weller’s solo and (mostly) acoustic live album recorded on tour from March to July 2001 and released in the UK in October of that year (the US would get a 2002 release date). Alone on stage, surrounded by a bevy of guitars, Weller played songs from his solo catalog – at the time, five solid albums strong – but also peppered the sets with songs from his previous bands. Essentially regarding the songs as part of one extensive catalog was a smart move, not just as a crowd-pleasing tactic but also as a way of putting the cohesion of Weller’s impressive oeuvre on full display. Days of Speed received an extremely limited vinyl run upon initial release, which is not surprising because the vinyl revival was still nowhere in sight. Prolific reissue label Craft Recordings have reissued the album as a two-LP set (his 2002 studio album, Illumination, will also be reissued on vinyl on 19 November). Ryan, Gavin (2011). The discography of Paul Weller, a successful solo artist previously a member of The Jam and The Style Council, consists of sixteen studio albums, [1] [2] five live albums, thirty-nine singles (not including re-releases or collaborations) [3] and three extended plays (EPs). The largely instrumental Spring (At Last) is as dull as dishwater, All Good Books is as exciting as the title suggests and the most interesting thing about One X One is the presence of Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer from Oasis, who sadly can’t elevate a slog of a song which meanders for five minutes without going anywhere aside from a mildly interesting mid-section. Sadly, it does tail off after a promising start; Leafy Mysteries was a functional single that sounded like a leftover from his Heavy Soul period and, as such, feels like treading water. Days of Speed is Paul Weller's second live album, released on 8 October 2001 in the UK and 2 July 2002 in the US. All songs were performed solo and acoustic from various venues around Europe. There’s No Drinking After You’re Dead (only a year old at the time but hardly revered) has a jittery energy on its parent album, but the intent of the song (Weller’s struggles with alcohol) is showcased superbly here.

Revitalised, Weller’s sixth studio album followed in 2002 but, once again, Illumination failed to make much of an impact. Paul Weller‘s Days of Speed reissue has been officially confirmed and will be issued alongside a vinyl re-release of Paul’s sixth studio album Illumination.
