Unfortunately, even after their progenitor's demise, numerous symbiotes lingered on and remained bonded to the innocent citizens, forcing the two Spider-Men to slowly clear out New York of the remaining symbiotes. The symbiotes have undergone a number of retcons, including needing to absorb phenethylamine and/or adrenaline to survive, turning their hosts evil, and being a spacefaring empire. Many of these retcons were aimed at further developing the character of Venom, who went from a villain to an anti-hero. For example, the retcon establishing the symbiotes as a benevolent peacekeeping force was intended to appeal to new fans who did not know that Venom was ever a villain and simply perceived the character as "a hero, a good guy with a super cool costume that can do amazing things" instead of a monster. [223] The ancient language of the symbiotes is rendered using the same glyphs as the Demonic Script of Limbo.Symbiotes have a genetic memory, allowing them to exploit their parents' knowledge through ancestral recall.
