About this deal

Ice Breaker Pale Ale is currently available in over 2,000 Greene King pubs and also independent venues, as well as major supermarkets including Tesco, ASDA, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose and Ocado. Alex Radcliffe, Marketing Controller at Greene King said: “We are thrilled to see Level Head and Flint Eye available on the shelves in Tesco and Sainsbury’s supermarkets across the UK and we can’t wait to see them being enjoyed by our consumers at home. The new offerings celebrate Britain’s wild flavours and eccentric past but are very much designed for the modern drinker. Targeting craft drinkers who enjoy flavour discovery with quality they can trust, the new range is designed to be enjoyed primarily by customers in relaxed premium drinking outlets, such as craft focussed bars, gastro pubs and quality sports clubs. The beers will be available on draught in selected Greene King pubs as well as in bottle. The range includes Flint Eye, a dry hopped lager named after a Neolithic flint arrow head found in the town. Western Zeph, a West Coast-style IPA is brewed with Godiva and Harlequin Hops, plus CF 184, a new hop that doesn’t yet have a name. Subterranean is an oatmeal stout based on a recipe dating from 1926 and takes its name from tunnels that once led from the local abbey to the brewery. On the nose, this deep, bitter, and intense oatmeal stout has an aroma of roasted chocolate and coffee, with hints of caramel and treacle.

Flint Eye and Level Head are currently available in a number of Greene King pubs, which can be found here: https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/premium-pint-finder/, and independent venues. The premium beers will be available in several major supermarket chains across the UK, in early 2023, including Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose. Light in body, but slightly dry with a medium bitterness and pithy aftertaste, this session IPA’s name hints towards the legend of St Edmund – the original patron saint of England from which Bury St Edmunds takes its name – who was beheaded by the Vikings in 869. Cask beer is incredibly important to our history and as we try to drive consideration with a wider audience, by creating delicious and exciting beers, we also need to give teams on the bar the information to shout about the different styles and flavours we offer too. Providing our customers with tasting notes enables them to really educate themselves about the beer on their bar and get their guests excited too.” The term ‘craft beer’ has expanded to become many things to different people, but in short, it means ‘individually brewed batches of beer’. Because each batch is brewed individually, it allows brewers to experiment with different flavour profiles and brewing techniques, improving the quality and flavour of the beer with every batch. The two craft beers, launched in July last year, are a vibrant homage to Greene King’s 200 years of brewing heritage and the historical myths and legends of Bury St Edmunds, the home of the Greene King brewery, and are designed for the modern-day drinker.Greene King has launched four new beers that reflect the brewery’s 200 year-old history along with the far older history of its home town, Bury St Edmunds. The process of brewing craft beer is essentially no different to the process big name brewers use to produce beer. All beer, whether ale or lager, is brewed using four key ingredients: barley (or rye, wheat or another grain), hops, water and yeast. The main process is to extract sugars from the grains so the yeast converts it to alcohol and carbon dioxide. The flavour varies depending on the combination and type of grains, hops and yeast used, and on the quantities used. The UK’s leading pub company, Greene King, has announced the addition of four new premium beers to its portfolio, as the brewer looks to expand into the craft beer market for 2022. Securing a silver medal for value and bronze medals for taste and design, Ice Breaker Pale Ale (4.5% ABV), was launched in 2019 and crafted by Greene King’s brewing apprentices. The unfiltered pale ale is bursting with fruity hop flavour.

The craft and heritage of these beers are what makes them unique and different from other craft beers, as we combine our centuries worth of expertise to create distinct flavours that resonate with the modern-day craft drinker. We look forward to seeing our distribution continue to grow and more and more people enjoying Level Head and Flint Eye.” Unlike other West Coast IPAs, Western Zeph is 100% British and brewed with English malts and hops, to create a bold, flavourful, punchy beer of medium-high body which is high in bitterness but has an underlying sweetness. Using re-imagined recipes that draw on their 200 years of brewing expertise, Greene King has created a new dry hopped lager, a session IPA, a west coast IPA, and an oatmeal stout, which have all been inspired by myths and legends from Bury St Edmunds, where they have been brewing for centuries. Greene King Brewing and Brands will be launching its new craft beers Flint Eye and Level Head, into Tesco and Sainsbury’s this month, following a successful launch in Waitrose and Morrisons. The beer has an aroma of tropical fruit, spicy hops, a touch of vanilla and honeyed malt. There’s a big punch of fruit – melon and pink grapefruit – on the palate with honeyed malt and a touch of spice. The finish is hoppy and bitter but well balanced by fruit and malt and is pleasantly refreshing.

Level Head is a session IPA that is light in body, but slightly dry with a medium bitterness and pithy aftertaste and has an aroma sitting somewhere between tropical and grapefruit notes. The Session IPA’s name is a nod to the legend of St Edmund, the brewery’s hometown’s Patron Saint, who was beheaded by Vikings in 869. St Edmund’s head was miraculously reunited with its body by a ghostly wolf and his sainthood was secured. Brewer and Pub chain Greene King has announced the addition of four new premium beers to their portfolio, as the brand look to expand into the craft beer market for 2022. Greene King brewing and brands marketing director Will Hemmings said: “Our new range of premium craft beers is inspired by Greene King’s 200-year heritage; but the recipes and tales have been reimagined for the modern craft consumer of today.” The pale ale’s name was born from the freedom given to apprentices to break boundaries of brewing within Greene King and develop the beer of their choice. Greene King’s second new IPA offering is the limited edition 5.4% Western Zeph West Coast IPA. This cutting-edge IPA is brewed using brand-new Harlequin and Godiva hops, as well as CF184, a hop so new it doesn’t have a name yet.

Greene King’s dry hopped lager, Flint Eye, combines peach aromas and taste with subtle pine notes, creating a crisp and refreshing beer that has a delicate balance of flavours. Flint Eye secured all bronze medals for taste, design and value at the awards. The full bodied, hoppy ale includes rich malty characters, which are perfectly balanced with citrus hop flavours. Craft lagers and craft ales are fermented using different techniques. Ales are top fermented in warm temperatures and can be ready to drink in a matter of weeks. Lagers are bottom fermented in much cooler temperatures and stored for a longer time at near freezing temperatures before being ready to drink. The awards land just ahead of the first anniversary of the launch of the brewer’s craft beers, Level Head, a session IPA (4% ABV), and Flint Eye, a dry hopped lager (4.5% ABV), which were launched in July last year and embody Britain’s eccentric past.Combining orange peel and citrus aromas with subtle pine notes, this lager is created with yeast that is fermented at a colder temperature for a longer time, resulting in a crisp and refreshing beer that has a delicate balance of flavours. Securing a silver medal for value and bronze medals for taste and design, Ice Breaker Pale Ale (4.5% ABV), was launched in 2019 and crafted by Greene King’s brewing apprentices. The unfiltered pale ale is bursting with fruity hop flavour and emanates waves of guava and passion fruit, which crash with big citrus flavours. Greene King has been awarded its first medals for its recently launched craft beers, Flint Eye and Level Head, and also Ice Breaker Pale Ale at the Bartenders’ Brand Awards this year. Lianne says: “It is great to see Spring Break appearing as one of the seasonal limited-edition cask beers we offer. As an apprentice the best part is getting to play with styles and flavours to create something new, and while it’s fun, it’s also important for my career development.

We’ve twisted and adapted traditional flavour profiles and channelled some of Britain’s colourful folklore to create authentic, modern, and exciting beverages, perfect for a new urban audience right across the UK.”

Greene King is releasing its limited-edition Spring Break cask beer for March and April, which was created last year in collaboration with the National Brewing Apprentice Programme. The Bartenders’ Brand Awards are a unique blind tasting, design and value-tested competition for spirits, wines, beers and drinks products in the UK bar industry. Flint Eye, Level Head and Ice Breaker have all been awarded medals for the taste, design and value of the beers. Alex Radcliffe, Marketing Controller at Greene King said: “We are thrilled to have secured medals for all three of our modern beers and it is a testament to our brewers and their skills that we have such a brilliant portfolio to share. Will Hemmings, Brewing & Brands marketing director, said: “Our new range of premium craft beers is inspired by Greene King’s 200-year heritage; but the recipes and tales have been reimagined for the modern craft consumer of today. Greene King’s dry hopped lager, Flint Eye combines peach aromas and taste with subtle pine notes, creating a crisp and refreshing beer that has a delicate balance of flavours.
