About this deal

Sedmdesátá léta, New York. Rituální vraždy. Sériový vrah. Bronx, gangy. Vzpomínky na Vietnam. A náčelník Jim Hopper proti tomu všemu. Get ready to journey into the supernatural world of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, coming to the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End.

I've always found Hopper an intriguing character with a lot of potential for further exploration and development, particularly from a noir or hard-boiled perspective - and while the second official Stranger Things novel goes some ways to achieving that, it leans heavy towards a more mainstream crime focus with hints of the other worldly thrown in in an attempt to tie it with Netflix series. One of the key things that we learn in the novel concerns Brenner’s rise to power. Naturally, the Brenner we meet in the novel is younger, but his supercilious nature and disregard for others are as present in the prequel novel as they are throughout the first season of the show. Perhaps the most surprising thing we learn about Brenner is that the absence of personality cultivated by Matthew Modine in the TV show extends to his ambitions, too. Brenner remains a largely blank canvas throughout the story, his motivations rarely extending beyond simple scientific endeavor. The closing line isn't great. The author went with the easy, predictable ending instead of trying to be more creative about it. One of the driving forces of Stranger Things is its big heart and the realistic way that the characters interact with one another. This book just doesn't have that. Also, Dr. Brenner is barely present. He was another reason why I wanted to read this book, to get in his head and find out more about him. He was an interesting character in the show, but he didn't have much time to shine. Sadly, this book doesn't give him that much time either. This is the Stranger Things origin story. What happened in Hawkins before season one? Look no further! Find out here!

Finally, we have Meddling Kids, an oft-featured favorite of ours on Reedsy Discovery and a quintessential read for Stranger Things and Scooby-Doo fans alike. What makes this book so great, you ask? Well, take a brazen group of crime-solving kids, add a spoonful of trauma from a night spent on a haunted lake, let it stew for thirteen years, and you’ve already got the perfect recipe for a dramatic reunion. Then sprinkle in tongue-in-cheek tropes and references to every “young detective” series over the past century — from Nancy Drew to the Famous Five — and you have a delightful mashup that’s equal parts brilliant homage and genuinely haunting horror, following a group of mystery-solvers determined to make sense of their nonsensical world. Not unlike a certain Netflix series we know. This book is for you, for joining us on this journey and continuing to inspire us… and it's for anyone who dreams for a living or dreams of dreaming for a living. Because this world needs more storytellers. It needs more dreamers. There is a short section with a few details of what is to come for season three, so if you are just itching for any and all news, you’ll probably need to give it a read. Overall, this is a fun book and will make a great Christmas present for fans!
