About this deal

This makes you want to put on spangled shoes and be a rock star -- it is a huge, riotous, spooky, ambient, moody, loud CD. Different Class scooped the Mercury Prize in 1996 – triumphing from a field that featured Oasis’ all-conquering Morning Glory and the Manics’ phenomenal comeback LP Everything Must Go. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. As well as perfectly capturing the behavior of his characters, Cocker grasps the nuances of language, creating a dense portrait of suburban and working-class life.

Different Class (released in Japan as Common People) is the fifth studio album by English rock band Pulp, released on 30 October 1995 by Island Records. Cocker had a friend who used the phrase 'different class' to describe something that was 'in a class of its own'. Be aware that even sealed copies of this may have vinyl that looks and plays like it been thrown through a hedge. Common People', though played a lot, just is such an important song, and no track better encapsulates a whole people.

Originally released in 1973, The Dark Side Of The Moon became Pink Floyd's first number one album in the USA, remaining on the chart for 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988. Pressed onto 180g vinyl, this special issue comes with an insert featuring Cocker's bitingly deft lyrics. On the heels of such excitement, anticipation for "Different Class" ran high, and not only does it deliver, it blows away all their previous albums, including the fine "His 'n' Hers".

The album explores sex and class with Jarvis Cocker's biting, witty lyrics taking a perfect snapshot of mid 90s English suburban and working class life. It really does sound like it was copied from an mp3 or a CD that had been riding around in the backseat of someone's car for a year. I have two copies bought when released and both dreadful quality pressings in fact the worst I've ever seen - both copies were replacements . Similarly, Jarvis Cocker's lyrics take two themes, sex and social class, and explore a number of different avenues in bitingly clever ways. Though he, like his band, wasn’t new at all – how very queer by today’s make-‘em-and-break-‘em standards.Forget all the rubbish indie bands these days they all post modern poor hybreds , Pulp are orginal talented and way beyond the boring commercialism that infects our charts in 2008 ! There are definitely Britpop bands I prefer - Oasis, for one - but I do think Different Class by Pulp is the genre's definitive moment. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all -- it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here.
