About this deal

As they increasingly spend time together Nell and Cricket help other heal through the struggles as they both move on in their new places in life. But the most unexpected surprise is when Nell strikes up a friendship with an eighty something year old widow whose husband she’s writing an obituary piece about.

The childless slant was quite relentless in this story, but as all light reads it wasn't meant to be taken too harshly, and all sides ended up being explored. Hilariously read by Sally Phillips, star of Smack the Pony , Bridget Jones Diary and Miranda - Confessions of a Forty-Something F--k Up is a must-listen for anyone whose life isn’t working out quite how they’d planned. Viena iš tų knygų, kur atrodo, skaitai ir visai mėgaujiesi, bet vis nepalieka jausmas, kad vien to negana. I could sympathise with Nell’s lack of confidence and sheer dissatisfaction with the direction of her life. I wasn’t completely invested in the romance aspect of the novel, although this did offer a lot of entertainment and I found it very relatable.I absolutely felt every word on a deep level being that I too am as the title eloquently states a 40 somthing fkUp , but now I realize I am not alone and it's never too late to be what you might've been . I wonder if I am alone in my feelings on this book or whether there are other women out there who feel the same way as me? All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f**k up.

We revisited our favourite friendship duo Nell and Cricket, went in a trip to LA, saw a couple of weddings, babies and navigated ‘love in later life’. Celia Walden, Telegraph The story of Nell Stevens’ struggle through her imperfect, messy life doesn’t just make brilliant fiction, it’s turning into a cultural revolution! Penelope or Nell as she prefers has moved back to the UK after breaking up with her American Fiancée. I thought this was going to be a story about her finding herself and I was hoping the ending would follow suit but then it just felt like such a let-down for me. If you've ever asked yourself "where has the time gone and why does everyone else have it together but me?

And I could relate to Nell quite a lot which is a credit to Potter writing her character really well.

Life, like us, is a sum of moving parts, and if we’re lucky, we get to keep f**king up, figuring it out and laughing in the face of it all. Following the poignant and relatable journey of a lead that you just can’t help but root for, we bear witness to Nell Stevens’ disaster movie of a life. Yes, it glosses over certain issues, yes, it might be very 'middle class' in places but it's a good story with enough depth to have kept me engaged throughout.

An editor, Nell secured a job with an old colleague crafting epilogues, and this is how she found a firm friend in Cricket, a newly widowed octogenarian.

Female friendships, the way some are domineering and will always show the 'my life is perfect', look at my Insta and look at my fancy wardrobe and stylised persona.

I totally agree one should never judge a book by its genre, it’s kind of not fair to the author, because after all isn’t it the editor/publishing house/agent that decide on the genre classification? A novel for any woman who wonders how the hell she got here, and why life isn't quite how she imagined it was going to be. There are also other characters that I loved reading about but I’m not going to mention everyone and their roles. Very funny, well written and insightful and was truly brought to life by Sally Phillips as the narrator. It is easy to feel sorry for Nell, but at the same time we want her to develop some resilience and inner strength to rise above it all.
