About this deal

I have both Fred Reinfeld's 1,001 Winning Sacrifices and Combinations and 1,001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate books. Other similar books are the Ultimate Chess Puzzle Book by Grandmaster John Emms, and Chess, 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games, by Laszlo Polgar, the father of the famed Polgar sisters.

The book predates computer checking, and the solutions are often not the only way of winning, and are sometimes incorrect. I still think it's very good though - part of the issue may be that I play almost entirely blitz when I play, so there's just not enough time to do the deeper calculation that I do when I'm solving Reinfeld problems.A lot of them don't have one solution, but several, and a lot of them should definitely not have been in such a collecton at all. While in the tactics book the chapters can actually be misleading because often the combinations make use of several tactics so if you just look for the specific tactic in the chapter heading you could overlook things. Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations is the companion volume to Reinfeld's 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate. Reinfeld's solutions do usually represent the best continuation, and its important not to settle for the exchange, when you could have won a rook! And I finally suggest that you do not need the solution to a problem directly underneath the puzzle: I have not seen any puzzle book except for those written for complete beginners with such a format.

By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The positions and solutions are available on the web, but I find even this poorly produced book more convenient to use than a computer screen. If you have an e-book such as Kindle, you might want to look into "Tactics Time" by Tim Brennan and Anthea Carson, which I wrote about in another thread. It is your responsibility to make sure that your operating equipment is compatible with the relevant software or video DVD before purchasing and that software purchased is functionally adequate for your needs. For example problem 52 where he gives a line in which Black loses their queen resulting in a nearly 6 point advantage for White, while the best move would keep the queen and give less than a 2 point advantage for White and in that line it's much more difficult for White to find the moves that keep the advantage too.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I go through these books about every 4 - 6 months, scoring myself as to solutions and, thereby, measuring my progress and focussing on my weaknesses.
