About this deal

If you are interested in canal/boating life as well as a bit of a voyage - and/or you are interested in th culture of France - I think this book is for you. Like many Welshmen he is talkative and confiding, but ill at ease with practical matters and liable to linger in public houses. I might sail the Phyllis May to France if there were thirty Tommies to take back and it would tip the balance in the struggle for Europe. It has also reached the heart of a daughter-in-law who has lurchers - the big version of the dog in the story.

To be fair, the English have a different viewpoint than regular people, and this book was intended to be halfway about their dog, a whippet, which was taken on the journey - I had no interest in the dog after about the first 2 pages.

You visit the France nobody knows - the backwaters of Flanders, the canals beneath Paris, the heavenly Yonne, the lost Burgundy Canal, the islands of the Saône, and the forbidden ways to the Mediterranean. I read Your Dog Is Watching You, and Your Dog Will Get You in the End, and How to Stop Your Dog Behaving Like a Bloody Animal.

We keep crashing into things and running out of fuel and falling in and people shout at us and stick notes on the door. There were many frightening moments, when they donned life jackets, clutched passports and the CD of Terry’s book and said goodbye to Jim. Having been on two narrowboat holidays, one on the Oxford Canal I was really looking forward to this but sadly I just struggled far to much with the style of writing to find it enjoyable. I was interested in the canal journey and parts made me laugh out loud but halfway through the book, it became repetitive particularly the descriptions of Jim the dog who has centre stage and as I am not a dog enthusiast just became tedious. You'll visit the France nobody knows--the backwaters of Flanders, the canals beneath Paris, and the forbidden routes to the wine-dark Mediterranean Sea.

Goodness, said Monica-but we are really pleased with her shape, Mozza: the low line, the big windows, and we've kept the grey. When a friend lent me this book in October, I was somewhat surprised, to start with, by the way it was written. Written with the author's glorious sense of humor, this is one of those journeys you never want to end. They like running the towpaths and thieving off fishermen; but fire up the engine, cast off the ropes, and it's the eyes, the betrayed eyes. There was a point 65% in that I wondered can I take more of this blather, but I had to know if they ever reached Carcassonne.
