About this deal

The back of the chair provides enough support, but the seat is lacking a bit of padding for extend sitting periods. We did not test the mat in a hot-yoga class, but we did spritz our hands with water to approximate a seriously sweaty session and didn’t slide. Our hot-yoga instructor agreed that the rosin helped, but only to a point—toward the end of class, she resorted to layering up with her yoga towel. But there is, and it represents probably the best combination of everything you require from a camping chair – comfort, weight, cost and packing space.

But most of our testers didn’t find anything about the Leap that separated it from the Steelcase Gesture or the Herman Miller Aeron. If you need a lightweight chair which provides comfort to the back of your thighs whilst also supporting your back well then we recommend looking at the Marko products, and in particular their Director’s Chair. This simple folding camping chair is incredible comfortable due to the luxury finish of the seating material but is also durable due to the leg construction.

I tried to remedy the tailbone thing by getting an [ergonomic seat cushion that isn’t a Wirecutter pick], but it just delays the pain. I wish it could be raised just an inch higher for proper alignment with my desk, but I solved that with a Purple cushion and one of Wirecutter’s under-desk footrests. This mat has a strong rubber smell, at least for a while, which not everyone loves, and rubber also contains latex. The Steelcase Think is similar to the Amia in that none of our testers found it terrible, yet only one person put it in their top three.

We use cookies to enhance the security, performance, functionality and for analytical and promotional activities. In our testing, each panelist evaluates chairs on the above criteria using a modified version of this ergonomic seating evaluation form (PDF) from Cornell University. If you’re interested in other inflatable chairs then please check out our comprehensive overview of the best inflatable sofas on the market at the moment. Even the thinner version feels thick under your hands and feet, and the socks have a tendency to shift around as you practice.light enough to carry on the outside of my pack using the daisy chain on the bag, or the tough looking catty handles. The Maiya Yoga Mat is generously sized (73 by 25½ inches) and latex free with a slightly textured surface. We also considered YogaPaws, a set of padded gloves and socks that could easily be the most portable mat-replacement option for traveling yogis. The Gaiam Performance Dry-Grip Yoga Mat, constructed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and free of latex, delivers a supportive, cushioned experience that rivals those of our top rubber picks.

One size C tester found that the Silq pushed them forward in an uncomfortable way and that the armrests dug into them. Although we haven’t tested it in the rain, it could probably provide some protection if it’s a light rain shower. Depending on the style of yoga you practice or your preferences, though, you may need to make a few adjustments. The Performance Dry-Grip has a glossy flower print on its surface and is slightly smaller than its predecessor—a standard 68 by 24 inches versus 78 by 26 inches. Following our initial testing, several people (including a Wirecutter staffer) have noted that certain JadeYoga mats they purchased from late 2016 through 2017 wore out much more quickly than expected. The chair is simplicity itself to fold up and pack back into the bag – the packed size is fairly bulky compared with some of our other choices, but for the royalty levels of comfort you are getting, we feel it’s a sacrifice worth making.

The Herman Miller Cosm Chair (available in low-, mid-, and high-back versions) is designed to shift and move with you. Chairs that lack backrests or have partial backrests: Pynt also warned us against stools and other seats without backrests, at least as full-time accommodations, “because no matter how virtuous you are, you will slump. The dual-material makeup does the job well, though we found the rubber side to be even kinder to the knees. We were hooked on this chair from the moment we removed it from its drawstrung bag and unfolded the legs – you literally sink into it and never want to get up again. I once bought a couple of those ultra-cheap ones you see for sale in petrol stations – however they quickly fell to bits and even while working they seemed to deliberately possess ‘pointy protrusions’ for maximum posterior pain! Lululemon makes two lighter-weight versions of The Mat: The Mat 3mm and The Lightweight Mat (5 mm) for travel, both of which have the same extra-grippy surface area and dimensions (71 by 26 inches) as the regular mat. Unfortunately, our yogis didn’t agree on the quality of its traction—it satisfied our hatha instructor but had the hot-yoga instructor complaining about slippage from the get-go.
