About this deal

It touches many different topics, such as the different types of ghosts within different cultures and their influence on films and literature. Through modern media, use of a ghost has become quite generic and somewhat one dimensional, so to learn about the different kinds of ghost and apparition (and some of the history behind each) is really cool. The book begins with providing definitions for the terminology that is used in the book such as what a ghost is, the meanings of myths and legends. A quickfire tour through the history of ghosts throughout history and different cultures, myths and legend, right through to modern 19th-21st century experiences and their use in pop culture. It definitely brought me back to the old Usborne books of the mysterious, which actually appear in the nice additional reading section. An Illustrated History of Ghosts provides a great overview of all things relating to ghosts from ghost catching, to haunted locations, to the pranksters themselves. This would make a fun gift for that friend that loves to watch unsolved mysteries or ghost hunter TV shows, or to those who are interested in dipping their toe into this area. The style of this book is very much a mix of historical and factual information on the paranormal (and those who took advantage of people’s gullibility around it), and all the fun pop culture stuff! He has worked on a variety of projects including merchandise for the Hyde Park Picture House, and producing imagery for several museum projects.

There were a few instances when really interesting details or myths were alluded to but the prose failed to go into more detail, or it was jammed into a list format that didn't help bring the subject matter to life for me.I would have loved to see the graphic novel go a bit or in-depth with some of the writing and details but without it just makes it an excellent starting guide and introduction to ghosts and ghost hunting. I did have a bit of a giggle when I read that poltergeists were described theatrical ghosts because they like to throw things around and traditional ghosts are described as quite talkative. It covers ghost stories, ghosts in media, haunted houses, places, objects, ghost hunters, ghosts in different cultures…the list goes on. It's more like a highlight reel than a history book, but for someone with limited knowledge on the subject there's more than enough here to make it interesting read. I understand it's a short book, but some of the things mentioned are glossed over to the point it really wasn't worth including them.

If you already know your stuff then you might not get too much out of this, but it still makes a nice book to have on the shelf and loan to guests. I think this one appealed to me a little bit more, guess I’m just more of a ghost fan than aliens, but I feel that each of these works, with their useful glossaries and resources, would be quite appropriate for teens and preteens who are interested in outré subjects. Following his degree, Adam served a year as the Students' Union President whilst simultaneously working as a freelance illustrator.I didn’t expect the book to go into such detail about things that I, personally, might not have even associated with ghosts (such as magicians).
