About this deal

And before the scruffy woman with the fat cats, a young couple with matching bikes and raincoats had lived here. I loved her in Ralph’s Party and she was only mentioned once, fleetingly and I thought that was rather disappointing but I could understand why, Ralph and Jem were the focus here, not the other (former) residents of 31 Almanac Road. A year before, both frustrated with what their lives were like after the birth of their second child, they looked for satisfaction elsewhere, Jem striking up a friendship with a single father and Ralph visiting his best friend--and falling for his best friend's girlfriend.

And, I'll be honest, I'm slightly biased against books with infidelity, so that may affect my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of the book. Although this is a sequel, don't be put off if you haven't read Ralph's Party, as After the Party can easily be read on its own. crumbling relationships, unplanned pregnancies, planned pregnancies, planned abortions, spontaneous abortions, stalkers, drug addiction, infidelity (emotional and physical), trips to california, revenge sex, celebrities,quasi-religious conversions/cults, etc.

A year after their problems started, Ralph goes AWOL and Jem is frantic to figure out what is going on with him.She stops in the hallway and peers at her reflection in the vast rococo mirror that hangs behind the front door. In Ralph's Party we meet the residents of 31 Almanac Road, who consist of flatmates Ralph and Smith and their new neighbour who moves in, Jemimah.

Before the very neat and well-organized family lived here, a scruffy woman with a deadbeat teenage son and three obese cats had lived here. When she gets there, she glances down, as she always does, into the basement pit of the house at number thirty-one.They have two children – the ever lovely Scarlett and Blake – and the change in dynamics that came with having children weren’t what Jem or Ralph expected.

This sequel revisits familiar, beloved characters and catches up with their lives since the book ended. She’s imagined this conversation a thousand times and every time her heart has raced, her skin has flushed. The first book was something of a cut above your standard chick-fic fare, almost heading into Nick Hornby territory, when he gets his culture/zeitgeist hat on and touches a nerve here of there. This reading group guide for After the Party includes an introduction, discussion questions, and ideas for enhancing your book club. It was a very turbulent year in the life of Jem and Ralph and I really didn’t know how it would end. Jem is Karl’s agent, and Karl’s joke (this is not the first time he has made it) is not funny anymore.
