About this deal

Whether you enjoy playing the newest games or watching box sets, this is the ideal amusement centre. The TV is pretty lightweight even with the stand attached, alerting you to the fact that all that glitters isn’t necessarily metal – but the plastic at the build quality’s heart isn’t apparent from any sort of regular viewing distance. In the end, though, while it’s a relief to find the 55A7GQ getting a few picture points right, those positives don’t get close to overcoming the problems elsewhere.

The TCL delivers much better picture quality overall, with better uniformity, higher contrast, and better reflection handling, so it looks better in both bright and dark rooms. When in ‘Game’ mode, Hisense is claiming a response time of 6ms for the E7K Pro (in 55-inch size) - which, if it’s anywhere near accurate, makes this TV rapid in the extreme. Colour tones still feel slightly off, though, there’s too much green again, and we become slightly more aware of a faint inner frame of extraneous light around the picture’s outer edges. Its Mini LED backlight and great local dimming feature deliver a fabulous experience, matching or exceeding more expensive TVs from other brands.Impressively the 55E7K Pro supports both the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ versions of high dynamic range video, on top of the basic HDR10 and HLG formats. The U7H is also better for HDR content due to its wider color gamut, better color volume, and higher HDR peak brightness. Vocals are surprisingly clear even when there’s a lot going on behind them, and they tend to sound as if they’re coming from the screen rather than below it or somewhere round the back. HDR also looks much better on the U7H due to its wider color gamut, much better color volume, higher HDR peak brightness, and better PQ EOTF tracking, so HDR content is more accurate, more vibrant and lifelike, and bright highlights pop much more than on the Samsung.

Hisense’s new VIDAA U5 Smart TV OS lets you enjoy all your favourite entertainment from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Freeview Play, and control your TV using your voice with VIDAA Voice. Hisense does provide a couple of picture tweaks we hoped might help us get a handle on things: a range of picture presets and an Adaptive Contrast mode with multiple settings. Unfortunately, the Hisense TV's viewing angle is inadequate, so the Samsung is better for a wide seating arrangement. Second, while the 55A7GQ’s colours are routinely impacted by the screen’s inescapable grey overwash, there’s enough subtlety in the way blends and tones are presented to reveal that the TV’s core colour processing is pretty good, in keeping with other Hisense TVs we’ve seen recently. There’s a decent sense of detail in the mix too, and Hisense’s audio processing has a fair go at placing these details so that they create a mild sense of Dolby Atmos’s three-dimensional staging. It’s not all that time-consuming to set up the Hisense, and it helpfully detects and flags HDR standards as soon as it recognises them. The Hisense U7 supports most common resolutions, and it displays chroma 4:4:4, which is essential for clear text from a PC. HDR10+ decoding – Each picture is changed to better represent the director idea thanks to dynamic metadata.

The C3 has a much better picture quality due to its perfect contrast and the ability to display much deeper blacks, so it’s the better choice for a dark room.Just don’t use the built in software for apps or anything, as they run poorly and display incorrectly. Unfortunately, like the Hisense U8/U8H, it doesn't work well with NVIDIA graphics cards, as there's tearing with test patterns and games. The A6H does have a wider viewing angle, so if you regularly watch content in a group setting, it’s a better option for that. Unfortunately, like the Hisense U8/U8H, it's difficult to calibrate quickly, as small changes to some areas made others worse.

It’s full of very useful streaming apps and catch-up services, though, and generally in their best versions - so it’s possible to overlook the VIDAA-centric recommendations it insists on making, and the fact that it occupies the entire screen. The image fades and looks washed out as you move even slightly off-center, so it's not a good choice for a wide seating arrangement, as anyone sitting off-center will see a degraded image. The built-in Google TV smart platform has a great selection of streaming apps, and with built-in hands-free voice control, you can quickly find your favorite shows. For starters, the set’s Dolby Vision IQ/Bright settings are both too bright, bringing out noise in dark scenes that isn’t supposed to be visible, and giving such content a pronounced grey/green hue. If anyone knows, please let me know (No, its definitely not "electrisy-armus", i've tried that a few times already). The bezels surrounding the screen are minimal - even the one across the bottom, which carries some branding and what passes for a design flourish at either end, is discreet. The E7HQ leaves nothing to be desired in terms of picture technology, but also in terms of music, thanks to Dolby Audio. But at least the dynamic preset proves there really are Quantum Dots inside this TV, unlike the much less saturated other preset options that we would normally look to for the most beguiling and consistent picture quality experiences. This ensures that input delays are minimized so that the player's reaction can be seen on the screen more quickly. Dolby Vision is also delivers HDR content - handling everything from deep blacks to vibrant colours, and it’s perfect for moody dark scenes.
