About this deal

It's high time Nikon finally got with the program to make a practical tele zoom like this again so we don't have to hump the f/2.

What this all means, is that the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G yields shallower depth of field than the Nikon 70-200mm f/2. If I was working in nasty, dirty areas, I'd forget the cap, and use an uncoated 67mm Tiffen UV filter instead. lens wide open, or when I look at the difference in the texture of the bushes behind a subject, the lens zoomed to 35mm or so, when using a 24-105 lens at f4 vs. As always, newer lenses don't make better pictures; all they do is funnel more money to offshore businesses like Nikon from our American and European economies, and give a little more convenience, like AF and VR — but not better pictures.I ask that you *please* "spoon feed" me the better (smoother) looking/textured background regardless of how isolated the subject looks. Macro is a full-frame L-mount lens that's designed to be a medium telephoto, portrait and macro lens all-in-one.

Seems Nikon has lost its mind with regards to its add-ons and accessories… the Motor grip for the D800, the Wireless transmitter for its high end cameras. In any case, you should be using this lens in AF-C mode most of the time since small changes in subject or camera distance – especially at the 200mm end – can result in noticeable shifts in the critical focus plane. If using this with other pro lenses with 77mm filters, get a 67mm -> 77mm step-up ring and treat this lens as a 77mm-threaded lens from now to eternity. There is no way for me to provide any quantitative data, because it would require a complex setup that involves machines shaking the camera in a certain manner and direction. Although this can't do anything about subject movement, it should greatly expand the usability of the lens in marginal lighting conditions. You can even turn the camera into a landscape of portrait position by rotating the whole camera without removing it from the tripod. Again, I won’t be able to provide any numbers here and it is hard to say how much better it is – probably between half a stop to a full stop (depending on the situation) is a good guess. There is a little bit of field curvature on the wide end, but it is off the center, so it should not be noticeable.

Tripods are banned in many public areas and inside most public buildings, and personally I hate travelling with them if I can avoid it, especially on planes. DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions. It's very sharp, compact, fast to focus, and at the time it had some of the best VR Nikon had in any lens. I don't know the Nikkors but the Canon 70-300 L IS has some field curvature and rather sucks IME compared to any of the other EF 70-200/4s and I've used every one.
