About this deal

Auslander is a timely reminder that literature can still be daring, provocative and controversial, and I read it while gagging with both laughter and nausea. Very funny satire described aptly by entertainment weekly as “like an unintentional bark of laughter at a funeral. Seventh has his unusual name because his mother (known to all as Mudd) was an identitarian fanatic determined to give birth to 12 sons through whom the fading Cannibal nation would be reborn. Though well-written and humorous, I feel the ability to enjoy this book is dependent on how much casual bigotry you can stomach before it stops feeling like satire and starts feeling excessive.

Seventh is one of her sons who has broken free but is drawn back as the family gathers for Mudd’s death – after which, by tradition, they are expected to eat her. I re-read Faulkner after reading Auslander, and it’s a far funnier, sadder and more profound novel than my younger self’s memory of it.Pero no todos los hermanos son unos fervientes caníbales y muchos llevan años detestando a la madre y deseando alejarse de lo que son. They are however pretty inept, and need the assistance of the patriarch Unclish, who founded the Can-Am University (where nothing but Cannibal thought is taught, even though it never really opened), to perform the Victuals. It means he reads a lot of work with a lot of hyphens, and if they are published Time magazine hails them with “It was about time…” The reason for his grievance is that Seventh was born into the most shunned, marginalised and feared of all minorities.

Auslander turns his taboo-shattering satiric gaze to cannibalism in this outrageous, salty take on contemporary culture .

The book is very funny and the premise is very clever but the joke is taken so far that it ends up being repeated too many times. Auslander used slightly ironic and comedic tone ornamented by the fantastical folklore of the past - on top of being funny and entertaining, it strips off the cliche, boring question of 'Why should we be divided, if we are all indeed the same human race? However, toward the end the grotesquerie got just a bit much for me and rather obscured what Auslander was trying to say. sur un fond d’absurde, l’auteur questionne les croyances et les traditions qui nous constituent en tant qu’Homme.

Auslander uses Mother for Dinner to make serious points about everything from the blandness of modern society to religious extremism . Of practical concern, she’s six-foot-two and weighs over thirty stone – even divided up between Seventh and his eleven brothers, that's a lot of red meat. But once Unclish begins on the ceremony, with its elaborate schema of Draining, Purging and Partitioning, and the vexed question of side-dishes, you’ll need a pretty strong stomach.Shalom Auslander's Mother for Dinner is an outrageously tasty comedy about identity and inheritance, the things we owe our families and the things we owe ourselves. Having disposed of a mother and walked away from a family - and possibly a lucrative future - there was much in here I could relate to, and a massive amount that I could not.

Does it take two generations to change from referring to yourself as Chinese to Chinese-American to just American? His mother's last wish is for her children to Consume her, and Seventh was torn between fulfilling his obligation to his people and finally break free from the tradition and identity that he had never wanted. And yet, and yet: the end of the novel is a wistful, regretful, even sentimental paean to the importance of heritage, of the right to decide, of the right to change.om den är skriven på ett humoristiskt och groteskt sätt så tyckte jag den var superintressant och smart på ett Orwell-liknande sätt mer än att den var rolig. Their names are unforgettable (as intended) but it depersonalises them, making them a complete unit rather than individuals.
