About this deal

With wisdom and practical insights, the author skilfully navigates the challenges and joys of raising children in the modern world, particularly when they are struggling with anxiety or low mood. Happy Families did actually remind me a bit of Mike Gayle’s All the Lonely People – the previous book I read. It's quite slow moving and there isn't a ton going on but it was a nice change of pace for me and a lovely insight into family life!

Happy Families is your definitive guide to understanding your child's mental health, so they can survive and thrive. I love books that give me a glimpse in to other cultures, different families and how they navigate lives issues.

Classic characters like Burglar Bill and The Jolly Postman have become firm favourites with a generation of children who are now reading them to their own offspring. We’re seeing more stories on the British Chinese takeaway pop up through podcasts and posts, sharing commonalities and differences, which in turn all feed into the rich tapestry of British Chinese history. Penguin presents Happy Families: The Audio Collection by Allan Ahlberg, read by Alexander Armstrong. Practical, pragmatic and helpful, Happy Families is a guide that takes the fear out of understanding and supporting your child's mental health. They would say, “Well, we showed our love by making the money so that you could go on that school trip, or have that book, or have that video game or whatever”. Toby Track is their little boy and he is exceptionally good at jumping onto stolen trains and rescuing them from crooks!

A classic Happy Families story written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Andre Amstutz Mrs Lather is getting quite worked up in her laundry. One of the times I sent it out, I was told the story is quite boring, so I had to work out which were the boring bits and I chose to take out that subplot. The Cantonese switching in the novel is really relatable for those of us with a Cantonese upbringing. It is a very warm and fulfilling story about the everyday dramas and secret pasts of an immigrant family living in Wales, who also happen to own a Chinese takeaway.

But there is grit here too, with rascism and cruelty to the vulnerable, witnessed by the very likeable main characters at their Chinese takeaway base. Amy, now fearful that her grandfather will slip away before the rift between her father and grandfather is repaired, sets about exploring the family history and piecing together the secrets of her family’s past. The story itself didn’t grip me and the narrative is very meandering, seeming to flounder at points and I really think Julie Ma needed to make her aims for the novel clearer. I loved the heritage aspect to the story which looked at the history of the takeaway itself, and also the context we are given into the lives of three generations of one immigrant family. I think previously it would have been a bit embarrassing to say that I run a small takeaway, but over the last few years, especially since the pandemic, I came to realise that it's more important than you think: just because something hasn't been shown in a glamorous light in the media or in fiction, it doesn't mean it's not important. Weirder still, they’ve lived in the same small flat above the takeaway for the majority of those years, with Amy’s mother Joan acting as their unfortunate go-between and buffer. On the other hand, I still have answers as certain characters stories weren't fully completed which is rather irritating.
