About this deal

It was through him that I encountered Thrasea, Helvidius, Cato, Dion and Brutus, and conceived of a society of equal laws, governed by equality of status and of speech, and of rulers who respect the liberty of their subjects above all else. Gregory Hays talked about his translation of Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, published by Modern Library. I think the repetitions give us clues to the things that Marcus found especially difficult or troublesome.

You could have said of him (as they say of Socrates) that he knew how to enjoy and abstain from things that most people find it hard to abstain from and all too easy to enjoy. My rating doesn't reflect on the work of Aurelius or Stoic philosophy on the whole - who am I to judge a work that is still being read, studied, and discussed nearly two thousand years after it was written? The main ones are the Codex Darmstadtinus 2773 (D) with 112 extracts from books I–IX, and the Codex Parisinus 319 (C) with 29 extracts from Books I–IV. With that in mind, the thing that prevents this from being a 5/5 is that, as a book, it is rather repetitive. The Codex Vaticanus Graecus 1950 is contained in a codex which passed to the Vatican Library from the collection of Stefano Gradi in 1683.

We give our best to give you the best book but in some cases we have to adjust few pages which are blur or missing or black spots. Her reverence for the divine, her generosity, her inability not only to do wrong but even to conceive of doing it. Do you think this is an attempt at emphasis through repetition or is there a subtleness that the depth of Greek (or Latin) allows and English does not?I used several modern editions of the Greek text, of which the most recent is by the German scholar Joachim Dalfen.

And if you are interested in Stoicism, then you should also take a look at some other books that explore Stoicism, Buddhism, happiness and enjoying life. I could find no listing on Goodreads that I'm confident is a fair reflection of what I actually read. In short, I recommend any reader of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius to put forth a concerted, mindful effort. All that aside, even giving every benefit of every doubt for my chosen medium (chosen because it was, like the Hitchhiker's Guide before it, "slightly cheaper," - read: free), this translation is. To a new reader, Waterfield’s nonuse of the term logos may make his translation a little more readable. Serious philosophical investigation required a familiarity with the language they wrote in and the terminology they developed.
