About this deal
The odd occasional textbook Spanish they use, let's you know the author may not know any Mexicans in real life.
But, before long, Teddy begins to draw strange pictures of a gruesome murder, and Mallory learns of the house’s dark past. As if that wasn't enough, little Teddy keeps conversing with his eerie imaginary friend, Anya, behind closed doors.Again, I didn’t find this an issue, it may have lessened the ‘wow’ factor a little but in some ways having to root around and piece things together played into the mystery for me.
After seeing such amazing reviews and hearing brilliant things from friends, I was really expecting a lot to be honest. The language is straightforward, the surprises really surprise, and it has that hard-to-achieve propulsiveness that won't let you put it down. The characters besides Mallory are boring and from the 50% point on, the story unravels and ends up a hot mess that doesn’t make any sense at all. No siempre he visto venir lo que iba a pasar, cosa que agradezco enormemente en este tipo de novelas.
They also help children develop their vocabulary, improve attention to detail and problem-solving skills, and build self-confidence-all while being incredibly fun to solve!
I also loved the cabin where Mallory was staying in the family’s back yard, a lovely little retreat to relax and spend time to herself. The illustrations in that book are what helped make it so great, and the same goes for Hidden Pictures. While Mallory eventually explores her own tragic backstory, it fills a gap more than it drives her character. Mallory and her newfound friend Andrien dig into the history of the area and try to solve the message from the disturbing drawings. This book is a house of cards, built upon flimsy right-wing dog whistles, hoping no one puts together the pieces to realize just how hateful it is. I also understand that my disbelief needed to be suspended, which I'm happy to do, but I don't even know what I was suspending it for? Well, the ending does go a little bit crazy but I confess I didn’t mind one little bit because I was seriously enjoying this one and was desperate to see how things would pan out.
