Now a Penguin paperback, this one-off collection of Alexa Chung's writing, doodles and photographs combines stories of early style inspirations such as her grandpa and the Spice Girls with discussion of figures of obsession like Jane Birkin and Annie Hall, reflecting on heartbreak, how to get dressed in the morning, the challenges of taking a good selfie, and more. Some reviewers appear to be morally offended that there isn't more substance to It but I don't see any reason not to enjoy this book if you know what you're getting into. IT attempts to articulate, enrich, and justify Alexa Chung´s status as an “it girl” through essays, personal reflections, doodles, anecdotes, and film photos that she has taken and collected along the way. I saw this pretty hardcover sitting on my friend's bookshelf and asked her if I could borrow it, not really knowing anything much about Alexa Chung beforehand but being none the wiser after reading her kind of memoir (? The early 2010s are not quite far away enough to have the nostalgia veneer on them yet, though I do think it’s coming soon given the 2014 tumblr fashion nostalgia TikToks I’ve seen.In this way, Chung is undoubtedly an It girl – an It girl for the kind of haters who like to pose as righteous. I love photographs, and I also recently discovered my love for memoirs (thanks to I’m Supposed to Protect You from All This by Nadja Spiegelman), so this book came at the perfect time for me to read and enjoy. She’s bang on and open (to a point) about heartbreak (“Scrolling through photos [on Instagram] of girls your ex may or may not be shagging won’t help you. And, despite her (self-confessed) habit of dating boys in bands, she’s clearly a girl’s girl who, I imagine, would be enormous fun on a night out. And when you pass the book onto your grandkids, that will probably be the bit when they finally grasp something of Chung's appeal.
