About this deal

This excellent wool and bracken compost, fresh from the hills of the Lake District National Park, offer a superb alternative fertiliser and growing medium for all gardeners. It can hold up to 20 times its own weight in water and according to the ONS, in the UK alone, peatland represents 27% of the UK ecosystem service accounts. Sheep wool was once a major product of the Lake District area but is no longer in demand and because the sheep need it to be shawn every year it is not almost just a waste product. You can use it just like any other seed compost, loosely filling pots or trays and placing your efforts in a greenhouse, propagator or warm windowsill. I have to admit that I have not always been satisfied with peat-free composts although I know that it makes sense to switch, so I was keen to try Dalefoot for myself and see how it performed.

Made from totally renewable resources with great environmental benefit to help you garden more sustainable. The addition of Comfrey has high, yet balanced levels of potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen that will give your seedlings a great first feed. The Soil Association is the UK's largest organic certification body and has over 70 years' experience.

Not only is it 100% peat-free and organic but it also packs a punch when it comes to nutrients due to the added Comfrey, wool and bracken.Their Whitefaced Woodland and Cheviot sheep flocks run up the bracken covered fells to Loadpot where they live and rear their lambs and graze side by side with our herd of native Fell ponies. This 100% peat free wool compost contains a mixture of sheep’s wool and bracken with high natural potash for great results every time.

This is something more and more of us in the UK (and globally) are suffering with due to the effects of global warming, and it is being made worse by the reduction of peat in our environment. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The feel of the compost felt strange to me and I was very unsure how all this was going to work – sheeps’ wool and bracken seemed to me to be a rather strange combination to put on my flower beds! You don’t need to add any fertilizers or plant feed into the compost because it is already packed with loads. The fine texture and drainage properties of this compost will create the perfect environment for encouraging your seeds to germinate.

The compost is fine textured and is perfectly formulated for strong and healthy seed germination, seedling growth and essential root-ball development. I have planted up one pot but intend to get some identical plants and 2 planters to try a comparison with 'ordinary' compost. The range includes Wool Compost Ericaceous (for acid-loving plants), Lakeland Gold (claybuster and mulch), Wool Compost for potting and containers and now there is also Wool Compost for Seeds. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.I couldn’t get my head around how a compost with sheeps’ wool in it was going to perform in my wet Cumbrian garden. Comfrey has been known to be one of the best composting plants, it is full of nutrition and helps plants uptake essential nutrients when added to the soil. On a global scale, the remaining areas of near-natural peatland) contains more than 550 gigatonnes of carbon. And like the rest of Dalefoot’s range, it has been approved by the Soil Association for organic growing. One hundred per cent natural and British, produced on a traditional hill farm in the Lake District National Park.
