About this deal

Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore has made a career treating killers, predators and those who have impulses to kill. She is considered an expert in her field, but will that be enough? The incident with Luke and the stolen keys didn’t add much to the story because we find out from Rob anyways that Randall’s MO was young girls. And the lost keys only led to Gwen running to Rob. I understand the need to throw red herrings and distractions but this didn’t really add anything to the story overall.

During the Second Sudanese Civil War, siblings Mamere, Paul, Jeremiah, Theo, Daniel, and Abital escape after their families and village are massacred. After numerous days of walking in the wilderness, they join a group of refugees but have to leave after they are caught by enemy soldiers and many people are killed. After sleeping in the grassland, Mamere wakes up and spots two enemy soldiers approaching them. Theo hides the rest of the siblings in the grass and lies to the soldiers that he is alone. He is taken in custody with the soldiers. The group eventually arrives at a Sudanese refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya, where Daniel succumbs to disease and dies. Thirteen years later, among the thousands in the camp, the siblings win for relocation to the United States. The last couple of chapters were a bit rushed due to the short lengh of this book. A.R. Torre could have easily written a couple of more chapters, which would have been beneficial to the characters and story overall. i rarely give 5 stars to mystery/thrillers because it takes so much to impress me with this genre, but it honestly doesnt get any better than this book.

I really enjoyed reading about the character of Gwen Moore who is a psychiatrist who specializes in treating those with violent fantasies. And there is this line which she said regarding one of her patient , "She just liked the idea of being interesting, and the thought that she had a secret and underlying homicidal inclination was a rainy-day fantasy she had embraced with maniacal vigor." TBH I read this line like 10 times before moving on and I don't think I need to specify why I did that. A little more individual character depth would have made this book a perfect one. Which is an opportunity no psychiatrist would ever let slip. Except Gwen is sure Robert Kavin is lying to her. And she herself has a secret she needs to hide at all costs. The Good Lie by A.R. Torre – My Review Dr. Gwen Moore is a psychiatrist who is an expert on killers, she treats dangerous predators every day, and she's hired to profile The Bloody Heart Killer, a serial killer who kidnaps, tortures, strangles and mutilates teenage boys. So what if the lines between business and pleasure were blurry? Robert and Gwen had spent a night together, and it might go against the code of conduct. Gwen is ready to ignore the temptation and keep it professional. But how can she when there’s a growing tension between them? And how will they handle it when both of them are hiding something from each other? There’s one thing for sure. Things were about to take a sinister turn. A vertiginous tale of serial kidnapping and murder that begins with a miracle and then heads sharply downhill. There's a serial killer in town and he has a type...all 6 of his victims have been high school boys..not just high school boys but ...popular, good looking and often with wealthy parents...hmmm Which is convenient, because the same day I started reading The Good Lie, I got the ARC of A.R. Torre’s newest novel A Familiar Stranger, coming in September 2022. And I couldn’t be more excited about it! Kavin hires Gwen, who he met previously, to evaluate Thompson and provide him with a profile that can be used in court. As they become closer, questions are raised, by the characters plus, I had a few of my own as well. Is there a conflict of interest here? Despite my attempts to predict the ending, I was left bamboozled! I definitely didn’t see THAT coming. Everything, including the multiple POVs, comes together successfully. I was left feeling satisfied and thrilled, with the exception of a few minor aspects in the conclusion that seemed a little too far fetched to me. This was my second book by A.R. Torre/ Alessandra Torre and I really enjoyed it! I almost gave it 5 stars because I devoured it, and felt on a high after finishing it, but I did unfortunately figure out one of the major plot points! I was a bit disappointed that one of the characters didn't even consider the thing which I figured out! However, I was intrigued enough by the other parts of the plot and the characters to keep reading, plus there was one twist which I definitely did not see coming! Impression halfway through: All of these people are REALLY messed up. I can trust no one. Why are they all so sketchy? Except Nina. She’s the real sleuth. Enter Gwen Moore, a well-known psychiatrist to the most depraved and violent minds. Her job is to get inside the minds of these potential killers and help them steer clear of their impulse to harm and kill. When Robert Kavin hires her to do a psychological profile of the BH Killer, based on the case files of all the victims, she begins to draw conclusions about who this person might be, but she also wrestles with Robert’s motivations. Are they personal or professional? It doesn’t help that the line between personal and professional is getting blurred between her and this handsome attorney. The Blood Heart Killer kidnaps the boys...keeps them for months...then murders them and carves his signature heart on their chest...OMG...7 boys...yet one lives to tell about it...or does he??I was really hooked onto this one right from the first chapter because there is something very special about heinous and gruesome crimes which fascinates me a lot and I love reading about them. First impression: I’m kind of confused to what’s going on. All of these people are messed up. I can’t tell if I’m going to like this book or not. i honestly was not expecting this to be so good. i havent read anything by AT before, but im pretty sure she was predominately a romance author, so i was intrigued to see how she would handle mystery/crime. and she does it well - its a good look for her. Gwen’s thoughts on whether Randall was guilty or not got a bit drawn out. It was too clear to the reader that it wasn’t him, so it made Gwen’s bias seem more silly to me rather than interesting. I was thinking, omg just realise it already! Gwen’s relationship to Rob. Despite being a psychiatrist, she was definitely not the sharpest when it came to Rob, how could she have possibly overlooked and accepted his actions?!
