About this deal

It’s a lot more expensive than most others but once you taste the coffee it produces and you understand the level of personalisation that it offers then it’s not hard to give this top marks for value for money. You may already have a drip filter coffee machine in your home or certainly come across them. It brews ground coffee via a shower head that drips through a paper or mesh filter. The standard cone shape basket fits into a bigger one with a maximum of 1.2 litres of coffee produced by the cone shaped filter and if you want more (unlikely) then you just remove the cone filter and a larger basket beneath will make up to 1.8 litres of coffee in 7 minutes. Steam the milk by filling the jug up to the bottom of the spout and texturing until the milk becomes warm.

Even if your machine is slightly older and the warranty has expired, Sage are still pretty good at trying to get you brewing coffee on their machines again. We tested each filter coffee machine in the same way, assembling them from boxed then following the instructions to brew a carafe of coffee. We tested each machine (where possible) on both the immediate process as well as setting it up to start automatically. Testing involved looking at the appearance of the machine and how it would fit in your kitchen at home, as well as ease of use, practicality, and the finished product for its taste and flavour profile. It is installed with the technology for you to be able to hook up an app operated by BILT to guide you through the process in 3D.

The verdict: Filter coffee machines

There are 9 different Sage Espresso machines on offer at the time of writing ranging in price and functionality. The Sage coffee filter machine is priced at the top end but has some unique and super useful functions that justify the cost. How on earth do you justify spending that kind of money on a machine that essentially just pours water on top of ground coffee and lets it naturally pass through the grounds and into your pot? This guy has been expertly engineered to minimise the time it take for you to make your favourite coffee while at the same time deliver super high quality espresso.

This is one of the simpler machines out there, with a simple one-button operation that gets your coffee brewing. It’s got a rather lovely paint finish that apparently is scratch-proof and won’t show fingerprints, though it doesn’t feel quite as robust and sturdy as some of the others out there. Sage has various machines that have a range of functionalities so the cleaning of your Sage coffee machine is normally specific to that machine. If you’re a cold brew drinker the Sage precision brewer has an option for you to slowly brew with cold water for upto 14 hours.

How we tested

Ground coffee brewed the right way is totally different to the same ground coffee made the wrong way in a cheap machine. Did you know that coffee is the most widely consumed drink in the world? Everyone likes their coffee slightly differently – sweetener or sugar, oat milk or full-fat, strong or weak. When you make your coffee at home this also gives you more flexibility with the recipes. Making a great cup of coffee at home… The milk frother does occasionally take a little while to get going, but as soon as the required pressure has built the steam wand enable you to texture the milk like a pro.
