About this deal

At 3.5 syns per refresher, you could have up to four refreshers before using up all your daily syn allowance, making them a great low syn sweet treat. Refreshers are however quite high in sugar, having up to 12g a small bar, so we would have these sweets in moderation. Syn Values Of Refreshers Still, it’s not been all plain sailing in the sugar confectionery aisle. Some of the biggest brands have lost millions of pounds, and gum is falling out of favour. The growth of veganism is in line with the evolving way that consumers, especially younger generations, are seeing health,” says Candy Kittens marketing manager Ana Melvin. “Perceptions of health have shifted from focusing on macronutrients to looking for natural, unprocessed ingredients this year, which is benefiting vegan confectionery brands.” Italian confectioner Perfetti Van Melle has unveiled its first-ever vegan lines – a duo of gelatine-free Fruittella soft candy.

On the slimming world plan, you can happily eat sweets and indulge as long as they fit into your syn allowance to avoid weight gain. We know that gelatine is not vegan-friendly but what about other ingredients in sweets? There are many accidentally vegan sweets in the supermarkets but you have to be careful when choosing. You’re always on the lookout for eggs and/or dairy, but there are a few non-vegan ingredients that can sometimes slip by- ones you may not notice at first glance. Here are the most common ones: Fruittella has announced the launch of a new line of gelatine-free soft candy after seeing the “huge demand for vegan sweets” from consumers. The vegan candy will be supported by the brand’s “biggest campaign in recent years”, including TV and VOD. Refresher bars have 3.5 syns per bar for an 18g bar, making them a great low syn sweet treat to have on the slimming world plan, they should be had within moderation however due to their high sugar content. The NPD was created to tap “the biggest trend of the 21st century – with over 23 million people now open to a meat free diet” PVM said.

The company will be promoting the new products in its “biggest campaign in recent years” with a series of television adverts. The company said this ‘new conscious candy’ adds breadth to the Fruittella brand, which also includes the successful Better For You sugar-free and less sugar ranges.Another key trend is the plant-based movement. A growing army of vegan shoppers have made animal-free sweets a hot area of growth. For proof, see the performance of Candy Kittens. The adult sweets brand has reported a 50% rise in sales since relaunching its range as 100% vegan in 2017. That makes it one of the fastest growing players in candy in percentage terms – up 46.8% in value this year on volumes up 39.4% (albeit from a relatively small base). Kenn to ensure that the sweets have “the same great taste that people expect of any Fruittella product,” the company has been mindful that “often the taste and texture suffers when gelatine is removed,” and has “worked to make sure our new Fruittella jellies have the same great taste.”

Launches – or at least, relaunches –certainly seem to be key in this market. Haribo, for example, has seen value increase 4.2% after overhauling its Funny Mix and Jelly Bean lines. And Rowntree attributes much of its 2.4% value growth to the relaunch of Randoms in March, including new pouches of Sours, Squish’ems, Foamies and Juicers. However, there is some good news! Fruittella do have some vegan sweets! In 2019, Fruit-tella released some gelatine-free bags of sweets that also happen to be vegan. These sweets are the gummy koalas, sour snakes and sour hippos. Their sugar free fruit drops are also vegan-friendly, coming in red berry and citrus flavours. Are Duostix, Zoomania or other Fruit-tella sweets vegan? The move to create vegan-friendly sweets was inspired by the rapid rise in demand for vegan products. Speaking to The Grocer, Fruittella brand manager Diego Pol explained that veganism was “the biggest trend of the 21st century – with over 23 million people now open to a meat-free diet.”

The Koala shaped sweets come in a mix of flavours including lemon, pineapple and raspberry whilst the Sour Snakes come in tropical, lemon, apple and raspberry flavours. If you think Brits are eating more candy because there are more reduced sugar options on shelf, think again. The launch of Haribo’s 30% less sugar Fruitilicious in early 2018 “has not been followed by a stream of reduced sugar variants as we may have expected” says Adam Paulson, client manager at Nielsen. Overall, Fruittella sweets are very high in syns, having up to 2.5 syns a sweet and being very high in sugar, to save syns we would recommend eating these sweets in moderation due to their high sugar content. The jungle themed jellies sport the vegan approved stamp from the Vegan Society, contain all natural colours and flavours and are gluten free. Because Fruit-tella sweets are so popular in the UK, it’s likely you’ll find some variation of them in most supermarkets and shops. However, the gelatine-free sweets can be a bit harder to come by. You may need to search in the larger supermarkets to find them. I have yet to see the sour hippo sweets in my local stores but this may just be my area! I have tried the sour snakes and koalas- I have personally seen them in Asda, Co-Op and Morrisons but they may be available at other stores like Tesco and Sainsbury’s too. You can also buy them online via Ocado. Which other sweets are vegan-friendly?Refreshers have similar syn values no matter the sweet you choose, we've listed some syn values of Refreshers and Swizzel sweets down below. Fruittella have been a popular sweet brand here in the UK for many, many years! They’ve been around since the 1930’s and now sell a few different types of chewy sweets. But are Fruittella vegan? Keep reading to find out! So, what’s driving an increasingly health-conscious nation to scoff sweets? Why isn’t gum seeing the same growth? And what separated the winners from the losers?
